Albion Photos: Brighton 1-1 Chelsea, 29/08/20

Photos of the pre-season friendly between Brighton and Hove Albion and Chelsea at the Amex Stadium on Saturday August 29th 2020 which ended in a 1-1 draw.

The match between Seagulls and Blues represented the first time that supporters had been allowed to watch professional football live since lockdown.

2,500 Albion fans were present with a whole host of precautions taken. Photo ID had to be shown to gain entry to the Amex, there were random temperature checks and two seats were left empty between supporters to maintain social distancing.

While the whole matchday experience may have been vastly different from what we are used to, it was at least reassuring to see that not much has changed in terms of what happened on the pitch.

You wait six months to see Brighton in person and they duly go 1-0 down inside 240 seconds. Chelsea’s new £45 million striker Timo Werner opened the scoring when poking a shot through the legs of Maty Ryan following a header down from Callum Hudson-Odoi.

The Albion did not manage a shot on target in the first half but there was a big improvement after the break. Neal Maupay squandered a brilliant opportunity to equalise when his poor penalty was saved by Willy Caballero and Adam Webster rattled the bar with a header.

With the game entering injury time, Brighton were awarded a second spot kick. Pascal Gross this time stepped up, making no mistake to ensure that the spoils were shared.

It was an encouraging display from the Albion. More importantly, it was great to be back in the Amex – as these photos of the day show.
