Leyton Orient 1-0 Brighton and Hove Albion
Tonight was billed as a second string Albion team on paper. However, the side that went out there you would expect to give most sides in League One a decent run for their money. If anything, that was the most saddening thing about tonight’s early exit from the Paint Pot - that a team that is not considered first choice should be good enough to be in mid table in the league, and yet our first choice team finds itself currently staring the trap door to the basement division squarely in the face.
Graeme Smith replaced Kuipers in goal, Virgo was back in at right back, Jake Wright played in central defence, Jim McNulty made his first appearance since his kidney issues, Dean Cox, Alan Navarro and Matt Thornhill returned in midfield, and Glenn Murray was back in attack alongside Gary Hart.
With many players playing for a place in what is best described as the currently underachieving first choice 11, it took until the 89th minute for Orient to secure their place in the next round as the Albion were undone by a classic route one goal
And so for the second time in two months, the classic cliche can be busted out - at least we can concentrate on the league…and boy, do we need to
