Forwards!
Well, another away win, and another cracking goal each for Albion strikers Nicky Forster and Glenn Murray.
Funny how it goes really. In August, many fans wanted to see the back of Glenn, myself included. He’d handed in a transfer request, his body language stank, and there was that whole ” deliberately not clapping the fans” thing at Brentford that pissed a lot of people off. Yet now, all his forgiven. He’s banging in the goals, he looks interested, he’s being much more positive in the press (having previously avoided it completely) and as a result, the Albion fans love him again. Yes, we’re a fickle bunch. But it makes you wonder what Russell Slade did to have Glenn wanting out, what Poyet has done to change things, and if the whole “wants to go back up North” rumour was just a smokescreen for some sort of behind the scenes trouble.
Personally, I’m just delighted we’ve got Glenn firing on all cylinders. Let’s hope he’s still here at Falmer.
This year Nicky Forster will turn 37. Yet he’s STILL a class act. His bicycle kick yesterday was stunning, and it tooks his tally for the season to 14. Yes, he might have the tendancy to go down a bit easily. Yes, he is often after the ref when decisions go against him. But he’s definitely the sort of player you’d rather have on your team than be facing. And in the form he’s one of the best in the business, no doubt about that.
According to Steve Claridge on The Football League Show this weekend, “with those two strikers, you’ve got a chance at this level”. Now, we’re not quite sure what he meant by this, but what’s more important than just having these strikers, is having them form an effective partnership. And they certainly are one at the moment. It’s taken time, but finally the players can be visibly seen linking up. At Wycombe, they were electric, and their display at St. Mary’s completely blew the Saints defence away. They’re both banging in the goals now, and if they can maintain the consistency that they’ve perhaps lacked over the past couple of seasons, than we might just have a comfortable finish this season, and can be a lot more optimistic about pushing for promotion next year.
