Poyet - Has He Lost the Plot?
Remember the day - February 15th 2010 may well be one that Seagulls’ fans look back on as the day when Gustavo Poyet condemned Brighton and Hove Albion to the basement division for the first time in a decade.
A sensationalised opening paragraph perhaps, but letting Liam Dickinson go on-loan to Peterborough United for the next three months could be a pivotal moment. Having already fallen out with Nicky Forster over the issue of the leading marksman’s contract, the departure of Dickinson means that in the space of a fortnight Poyet has lost the scorers of 16 of the 35 league goals amassed this season.
So with those two effectively out of the running to lead the line, we rely on Glenn Murray. Murray is arguably the most talented player in the squad at the minute, but there are a couple of problems - namely, his injury record and the fact he is still yet to net a Withdean goal this season. History suggests that he will not make it through to the end of the season without a spell on the sidelines, and bearing in mind the midfield have been about as useful as a pair of shoes for a person with one leg in terms of suppling goals (Crofts excepted), Murray is going to need to be fit and firing on all cylinders if the Albion are going to stay up.
Alongside Murray, we are relying on a player who looks about 12 and is fresh out of non-league in Chris Holroyd, or Gary Hart, a man who although will always give you 110% and played a massive part in last seasons great escape, hasn’t scored a goal since 2006. Neither look like a realistic answer
The one hope then is that Poyet has got a new striker lined up to come in or that him and Forster have burried the hatchet and our top scorer will be back leading the line come Saturday’s trip to The Leeds United. Goals win games, and without somebody new to come in and share the burden that Glenn Murray is seemingly going to be carrying single-handedly, it is hard to see how the Albion are going to get the goals to prevent first-visits to Morecambe and Burton Albion come next season
