Cliché!
Looks like we might be staying up, doesn’t it?
A cracking win on Saturday, and a corking goal from Bennett.
But let’s not let that “worldy” (as described by the Oldham manager) overshadow the rest of the game.
We weren’t that good.
Oldham missed a free header from a couple of yards, Brezovan made an awesome double save close to half time, he then stopped the penalty brilliantly, before the Oldham forward smashed the rebound onto the bar. Navarro in my opinion was a little lucky to stay on the field for the tackle he made that got him boked and we didn’t really create much all game. Oh, and our second goal came through the Oldham defender making the shrewd decision to smash the ball into the top corner.
But you know where this is going. It’s the old football cliché. The sign of a good team is one that can play badly and still win.
We rode our luck at times, but we just showed enough class to beat our opposition. And that luck and bit of class in our favour is exactly what we didn’t show at the beginning of the season, and is a big reason why we’re now looking unlikely to go down.
Still, let’s not ignore the contribution from the backline. Gus and Taricco have really sorted out the defence. Elphick has been brilliant of late, and Calderon has proved a superb signing. However, Marcos Painter has really added strength in the full back position. He hasn’t had much praise on here yet, and I can’t be arsed to write another entire blog begging Tony Bloom to sign him up. But on Saturday, he had a storming game. Let’s hope he, along with Calderon, can somehow be persuaded to join in the summer.
