Brighton 1-3 Chelsea: Player ratings as Albion edged out by Blues

Something new for the 2020-21 season here at WeAreBrighton.com – post game player ratings. We asked you on Twitter to give player ratings for every Brighton player who was on the pitch for at least 15 minutes in the 1-3 defeat to Chelsea and we have now turned them into a definitive set of scores.

Each player is rated out of 10 with an average taken from your submissions and it will come as no surprise to anyone that Tariq Lamptey was the man topping the charts against his former club.

At the opposite end of the rankings, Neal Maupay and Aaron Connolly did little to back up Graham Potter’s assertion that the Albion do not desperately require a new striker as they were the lowest ranked players.

Here are our Albion player ratings from the Brighton 1-3 Chelsea:

Maty Ryan – 5.33
We were pretty surprised at the amount of Albion fans laying the blame for the Chelsea penalty at the door of the Aussie goalkeeper. A somewhat harsh score given that he could do little about Reece James’ stunner and the deflected third off Adam Webster.

Adam Webster – 5.67
Unfortunate to deflect Kurt Zouma’s shot past Ryan for Chelsea’s third goal. Enjoyed the extra freedom to come barrelling forward that he was afforded by Potter playing a back three.

Lewis Dunk – 5.83
It was a strong showing defensively for the reigning WeAreBrighton.com Player of the Season but his ratings took an understandable hit for putting that free header from five yards off target in the second half.

Ben White – 6.25
As far as Premier League debuts go, this was a solid one for the highly rated defender as he ranked best of Brighton’s three centre backs. Had Virgil van Dijk made the second half block which White produced from Tim Werner’s shot then it would be replayed on a constant loop on Sky Sports News for the next two years.

TARIQ LAMPTEY – 8.42
Gave Marcos Alonso a torrid time all evening to rank more than a point clear of his nearest rival for man-of-the-match. Make the most of him folks; if he keeps playing like this then he will be attracting serious interest from one of the big boys before long.

Steve Alzate – 5.58
His blind pass on the edge his own area gifted Chelsea their opener, undoing all of the good work Brighton had put in during a promising start. Recovered well and he should be a better player if he learns from the mistake.

Yves Bissouma – 7.00
Looked good on the ball in deeper positions and covered every blade of grass again. The Mali international has firmly established himself as Potter’s first choice in the midfield engine room.

Solly March – 7.25
Amazing what happens to his performance levels when he plays in front of an empty Amex rather than one in which 50 percent of the crowd dislike him more than their own mother-in-laws. Brighton’s second best player after Lamptey, he looks well suited to the left wing back slot if Potter sticks with a three man defence.

Adam Lallana – 5.83
One lovely little through ball sliced the Chelsea defence wide open, only for Maupay to fail to make the most of the opportunity. Showed enough to suggest that he will be an important player if Brighton can keep him fit – which is a very big if given he lasted less than 45 minutes.

Leandro Trossard – 7.00
With a season in the Premier League under his belt, goals and assists are the currency which will now define if the Belgian international is a success at the Amex. Made a good start in that regard with a well struck shot for Brighton’s consolation, even if there were questions over Kepa Arrizabalaga’s goalkeeping.

Neal Maupay – 4.58
Not one of his better evenings. Shouldered a free header harmlessly out of play from a brilliant Lamptey cross and then the ball got caught under his feet from Lallana’s through pass, prompting a very audible “OH F**K NEAL” from one of his teammates.

Aaron Connolly – 5.00
Joined Maupay up front after replacing the injured Lallana. He fared slightly better than his French strike partner, although this was an attacking performance which underlined just how badly the Albion need striking reinforcements.
