Elvis Manu leaves the building
Elvis Manu has left the building with the Brighton and Hove Albion striker moving on a free transfer to Genclerbirligi SK of the Turkish Super League.
The Dutchman arrived in August 2015 for a frankly ridiculous £1.5m, making him the joint third most expensive signing in the clubs history at the time.
For that, we got 17 appearances, three goals against lower league opposition in the League Cup and a player who seemingly had no clue about the concept of the offside rule. This did however allow for the popular ‘How long until Elvis is offside sweepstake’ with the winning time being a scarcely believable two minutes after coming off the bench.
His best moment in an Albion shirt came when a ball hit him in the knee and rebounded into the net away at Crawley Town last pre-season. As ever, the clubs official Twitter had to take an overly positive view of the situation by claiming it was a great goal that was “slotted home”.
The Twitter account manager has since been headhunted by the North Korean regime for a significant role in their propaganda department.
There were two loan spells with Huddersfield Town and back in his home country with Go Ahead Eagles. His time with the Eagles ended in surreal circumstances when they sent him packing after he Tweeted wishing former club Feyenoord good luck on the same day that the Eagles were relegated from the Eredivisie.
Manu’s new club finished 8th in the Turkish Super Liga next season and are nicknamed the Wind of Ankara. Which is ironically what tends to happen to us after a 2am kebab on the way back from an away game.
