The History of Brighton and Hove Albion v Burnley

Meetings between Brighton and Hove Albion and Burnley have only become a regular occurrence since the turn of the century and although the draw is the most common result, they are encounters that are never normally lacking in action.

That does right the way back to our first meeting in the FA Cup of the 1960-61 season. Burnley were the reigning English champions and a side packed with internationals yet they couldn't find a way past second tier Albion at the Goldstone, a ridiculously entertaining game eventually finishing 3-3.

The Clarets made their most of their second opportunity, winning the replay at Turf Moor three days later 2-0 on their way to the semi finals of the competition, where they were eliminated by that seasons double winners Tottenham Hotspur.

In more modern times, games with Burnley have provided a fantastic opportunity for players and managers to throw their toys out of the pram. Mark McCammon started that tradition when he took exception to Mark McGhee hauling him at half time of the sides 1-1 draw at Turf Moor in April 2005. McGhee didn't took this lack of discipline lightly and threw McCammon off the team coach as it was about to return south, leaving the bewildered striker to wander into Burnley town centre and attempt to make his own way home.

McCammon was at it again the following season after the two sides played out a 0-0 draw at Withdean, taking exception to Ian Hart's suggestion on BBC Southern Counties Radio that he wasn't good enough to play for the club. In an extraordinary piece of radio, McCammon actually phone up the show to remonstrate with Hart and went onto lay into the rest of this team mates and his manager live on air. Needless to say, he didn't play for the club again.

With those sorts of highlights in his back catalogue, McCammon would no doubt have enjoyed a similar performance from Gus Poyet in the game at Turf Moor on Good Friday 2012. Brighton were still mathematically in with a chance of making the play offs but in an excellent piece of leading by example, Poyet clearly didn't think so and stormed off down the players tunnel - located about 150 metres away from the dugouts at Burnley, lest we forget - with five minutes remaining. The locals are still looking for his toys up there now.

It's unlikely Chris Hughton will put in such a performance and he'll be hoping his players don't replicate two of the other memorable clashes with Burnley - the 2002 home game in which only Steve Sidwell scoring twice in the 94th minute rescued a 2-2 draw after the Albion looked destined to lose 2-0 and the 2011 home game in which Ashley Barnes and Romain Vincelot managed to get sent off inside of 12 minutes.

That game finished 1-0 and when it remains one of the less entertaining meetings with an opposition, you know you are dealing with a fixture that throws up some classics. More of the same please.
