The History of Brighton and Hove Albion v Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough remain responsible for the heaviest ever defeat in Brighton and Hove Albion history when a Brian Clough-inspired Boro ran rampant at Ayresome Park on the opening day of the 1958-59 season.

It was the Seagulls first ever game in the second tier of English football but it quickly descended into a nightmare as the hosts went in at half time 5-0 up. It eventually finished 9-0 with future Brighton boss Clough scoring five of them.

Clough seemed to like playing against the Albion as he notched a hat-trick in the return game at the Goldstone four months later. It was another ridiculous score line on that occasion as well as Boro ran out 6-4 winners, meaning they picked up four points and put 15 goals past us in two games. Despite that, we still managed to finish above them in the table.

Our only previous FA Cup meetings came in the 1905-06 season when big spending Middlesbrough visited the Goldstone at the second round stage. Proving that it isn't just Paul Barber who loves making profit, the Albion doubled ticket prices to an astonishing 5p with the result being that many people stayed away, leaving a disappointing crowd of 7,462 to witness Brighton's first game at that stage of the competition.

It took two replays for Boro to eventually progress, winning 3-1 at Bramall Lane at the third attempt thanks to a hat-trick from footballs first ever £1,000 player, Alf Common.
