Liam Bridcutt voted WeAreBrighton.com Player of the Month for January 2013
Want to know just how good Liam Bridcutt is? For the third month running, he has been voted our WeAreBrighton.com Player of the Month, making history as the first player to win three back-to-back awards.
Having won both November Player of the Month and December Player of the Month, the diminutive midfielder held off the challenges of Andrea Orlandi and David Lopez to take the prize.
The most impressive thing about Bridcutt’s January was how at home he looked against Premier League opposition in the FA Cup meetings with Newcastle United and Arsenal. Gus Poyet – never one to get carried away – went so far as to say he was good enough to play for Real Madrid. While that may have been slightly farfetched, there is no question that the Albion’s best bit of business in the January transfer window was fending off the interests of Premier League Norwich City for his services.
Second place Orlandi meanwhile really came into his own in his fifth month at the Amex, looking like the creator in chief we have been crying out for in the middle of the park since Vicente began his winter hibernation in the physio room. He’s also added goals to his game, scoring in the FA Cup win over Newcastle United and the league victory against Derby County.
Lopez also enjoyed an excellent January in a variety of different positions. He had his best game of the month at right back against Newcastle, scored a thumping volley in the draw at Birmingham City and then enhanced his reputation as the coolest of penalty takers when netting from the spot in the 90th minute to rescue a 1-1 draw away at Blackburn Rovers which led to “Spanish Dave” trending on Twitter.
