Vote for your February 2022 WAB Brighton Player of the Month
Putting together a shortlist for our WAB Brighton February 2022 Player of the Month award was bloody hard work as the Albion have been a bit rubbish.
FA Cup elimination at the hands of Spurs in the opening game of February meant that the Seagulls were left with only the Premier League to concentrate on over the final three months of the season.
A 2-0 victory at Watford in the first Premier League fixture of the month kept hopes of a top six finish alive and meant Brighton had lost only four times from 23 matches.
Dreams of European football have since been well and truly dashed, however. Three defeats in the space of 11 days have left many Albion fans to conclude that 2021-22 is now drifting into nothingness, despite the prospect of the Seagulls recording their highest ever finish in English football.
Losing 2-0 at Manchester United to kick off that disappointing run was not entirely unexpected. United had their usual helping hand from a set of match officials who had clearly been told to do everything they could to ensure that the Red Devils were not humbled by a team like Brighton.
In contrast, no excuses could be made for the subsequent two home defeats. A 3-0 hammering against bottom of the table Burnley who had won only once all season was the worst home result since Plucky Little Bournemouth won 5-0 at the Amex in 2019.
That was followed by a 2-0 home defeat to an Aston Villa outfit who arrived in Sussex in pretty bad form themselves.
Two shots on target in 180 minutes against clubs below Brighton in the table was not a great way to conclude the month.
Which left us with the question of who had been the six best Brighton players in February? We came up with the following individuals and scratched around for the following reasons. Slim pickings, indeed.
The candidates for WeAreBrighton.com February 2022 Brighton Player of the Month
Yves Bissouma
Makes the shortlist for being the best player on the pitch in the FA Cup game away at Spurs, including scoring his first goal of the season. It must be said he has been a shadow of his usual self since then, a set of below par performances leading more and more Albion fans to conclude that last year’s WAB Player of the Season knows he is off this summer and is going through the motions as a result.
Alexis Mac Allister
An industrious presence who has kept working and trying to make things happen, even as the Albion’s form continued slumping as the month went on. His decent assist record from set pieces continued when swinging over the corner which led to Webster netting at Watford.
Solly March
Was Brighton’s best player in the Burnley and Villa debacles, coming off the bench in the first of those games and then being at the heart of the rare good stuff done going forward in the second. How you can fit both him and Marc Cucurella in the same team without blunting the attacking threat of one of them is quite the question.
Neal Maupay
Remember the days when Neal Maupay was criticised for missing too many chances? Oh how we long for those compared to the Burnley and Villa matches when he was utterly starved of service. That has been a theme across the month, making his brilliant scoop volley from a rare sight of goal to start the party at Watford all the more impressive.
Robert Sanchez
Made a string of good saves in the second half against Manchester United to keep Brighton in the game until the 96th minute. His best stop of the month came from a Philippe Coutinho free kick when Villa came to the Amex in another match which might have ended in a heavier defeat without his interventions.
Adam Webster
Had a bit of a nightmare at Spurs by helping Harry Kane to two goals. Much improved the following week when scoring the second in a colossal individual showing against Watford. What might swing the February Player of the Month award Webster’s way is that Brighton have looked all over the place at the back since he has been out injured.
Poll closes at 8pm on Sunday 6th March
