Vote for your December 2022 WAB Brighton Player of the Month
One draw, one win and one defeat made for a mixed December 2022 as Brighton returned to action following the World Cup, leaving no obvious winner for our WAB Player of the Month Award.
The good news is that means we found it very easy to include Jason Steele on the shortlist for the second month running.
Singing Hills’ best golfer finished with a scandalously low 0.84 percent of the vote in our WAB November Player of the Month award, but hopefully his penalty saving heroics in the Carabao Cup shootout away at Charlton are enough to push him further up the list (ie into first place).
Not that we are telling you how to vote. This is simply a reminder that Steele kept out two Addicks spot kicks which might otherwise be forgotten in amongst Brighton missing four of their own penalties, elimination from the Carabao Cup at the hands of a struggling League One team and The Queue.
The draw at Charlton was followed by two much improved Premier League performances. A rare victory over Southampton was secured in comfortable style, Brighton sauntering into a 3-0 lead in a match they eventually triumphed 3-1 in to secure just a third ever win at St Mary’s.
Premier League leaders Arsenal inflicted the only December defeat on the Albion but that did not tell the entire story of an enthralling New Year’s Eve at the Amex.
Despite being 3-0 ahead with an hour played, the Gunners were left hanging on by the end as Brighton enjoyed a superb final 30 minutes.
The Albion scored twice and had another goal controversially chalked off for offside on their way to an underserved 4-2 defeat. To have the best team in England looking visibly worried was a credit to Brighton.
The candidates for WeAreBrighton.com December 2022 Brighton Player of the Month
Levi Colwill
Injury to Adam Webster presented the on-loan Chelsea defender with an opportunity and he has grabbed it with both hands. He has been commanding defensively and superb in possession whilst also adding balance to the defence as a left footed centre back.
Evan Ferguson
Showed great courage to stand up and take the third penalty in the Charlton shootout, becoming the first Brighton player to score by showing more senior colleagues Leandro Trossard and Pascal Gross how it should be done. His first Premier League goal followed against Arsenal with a finish combining pace, strength and calmness.
Adam Lallana
The veteran midfielder is playing his best football since being voted England Player of the Year 2016. Roberto De Zerbi has made Lallana a key component as the number 10 in a 4-2-3-1, resulting in mesmerising displays such as the one which blew former club Southampton away. He even notched a goal against the Saints for good measure.
Solly March
One of the Albion’s best players so far in the 2022-23 season, the big criticism of March has been his lack of goals. That was summed up perfectly when he skied a penalty against Charlton which could have given Brighton victory following Steele’s heroics, leaving many Brighton fans wondering if he would ever score again. That question was answered in emphatic style five days later at Southampton with one of the goals of the season.
Kaoru Mitoma
The joke goes that Chelsea will soon be preparing a £250 million bid for Mitoma. If he maintains his current form over the second half of the season, then that might not be far from the truth. Southampton could not deal with him and he scored one legal goal past Arsenal as well as having another effort disallowed because one of his neck hairs had strayed offside.
Jason Steele
Two penalties saved at the Valley. Nothing more to be said.
Poll closes at 8pm on Sunday 8th January
