Danny Welbeck voted WAB October 2024 Brighton Player of the Month

Welbz is Dat Guy. Three goals in three October 2024 Premier League games took Danny Welbeck to his first ever WAB Brighton Player of the Month Award as the veteran striker continues to age like a fine wine.

Welbeck notched the winner to complete the magnificent 3-2 comeback win against Spurs at the Amex. It maintained his frankly ridiculous record of scoring against former clubs and arch rivals of former clubs.

Dat Guy next provided the only goal of the game as Brighton beheading home from Newcastle United with a 1-0 victory over the Saudi Sportswashers.

Welbeck then opened the scoring for the Albion at home to Wolves. We won’t mention what happened in the latter stages of that game once Brighton moved 2-0 ahead against the side bottom of the Premier League out of respect for readers’ sanity.

There was more to Welbeck in October 2024 than just goals for Brighton. With Lewis Dunk injured, Dat Guy captained the Albion for the first time in the Wolves draw.

He was an obvious armband choice for Fabian Hurzeler, who has spoken on multiple occasions this season about the importance of Welbeck’s experience and professionalism to a young squad.

Dat Guy has even been linked with an England recall, over six years since his most recent international cap against Switzerland at the King Power Stadium in September 2018.

Welbeck ended October as the second-highest scoring Englishman in the Premier League so far this season after Cole Palmer.

Take away the four goals Palmer scored when Brighton delivered a defensive disaster-class away against Chelsea and Dat Guy would be leading the way.

Welbeck winning the Golden Boot at the 2026 World Cup, firing Thomas Tuchel’s Three Lions to glory and collecting the famous gold trophy from Donald Trump? You heard it here first.

It was a tight battle for second spot behind Welbeck in WAB October 2024 Player of the Month. Bart Verbruggen just about edged it with 1.5 percent more of the vote than Georginio Rutter.

Verbruggen made at least three outrageous saves to secure a clean sheet in the win at Newcastle. Without the Dutch number one in such inspired form, we would be here talking about Welbeck’s goal being a mere consolation.

He then made several more crucial interventions against Wolves – although he probably left the Amex that day wishing he hadn’t bothered.

If the visitors scored two goals long before the final seven minutes as they had threatened, the manner in which Brighton dropped points would not seem so disastrous. Anyhow, we are not supposed to be mentioning that Wolves result.

Rutter meanwhile recorded one goal and three assists in October. Arguably more important, he provided plenty of entertainment with his post-game reactions after Tottenham and Newcastle caught on camera in the tunnel by the Albion social media team.

The £40 million record buy provided the equaliser against Spurs. He then set up Welbeck for the winner using a slide tackle; something you do not see anywhere near enough at Premier League level.

That same Rutter-Welbeck link up was on show in both the Newcastle and Wolves games too. Rutter slipped in Welbeck at St James’ Park as part of a delightful one-two before doing likewise against Wolves following Fedri Kadioglu winning possession.
