Brighton Player Ratings October 2024: All hail King Georginio
There was plenty of entertainment through October 2024 and with it being a near-perfect split of good and bad, we have a set of wide ranging Brighton Player Ratings.
At one end of the scale sits Georginio Rutter. Or King Georginio Rutter as he was in October. At the other lies Mats Wieffer. For very obvious reasons, unless you have managed to blank that Wolves game at the Ames out of your mind. In which case, sorry to remind you about it.
The Albion started October by being 2-0 behind at half time against Spurs. It could quite feasibly have three or four. What followed in the second 45 minutes was an astonishing comeback to win 3-2 and leave Ange Postecoglou lost for words.
Defensive woes were forgotten about at Newcastle United when a gritty performance secured a 1-0 win. Wolves came next at the Amex; the less said about that, the better.
The month was then rounded off by elimination from the League Cup at the hands of Liverpool. Fabian Hurzeler opted to rest eight players when a full strength Brighton XI could have feasibly defeated Liverpool’s second string and advanced to the quarter finals. A missed opportunity? Perhaps.
Here are your WAB Brighton October 2024 Player Ratings.
1) Georginio Rutter – 7.79
Goal and an assist against Spurs. Assist against Newcastle. Another assist against Wolves. Fast on his way to becoming a real fan favourite for his output, his work rate and how much fun he is. Next time his horse runs at Lingfield I will definitely be sticking a tenner on it.
2) Carlos Baleba – 7.37
The Wolves debacle offered an indication of just how important Baleba has become to Brighton this season. Hurzeler taking off his young midfielder coincided with the visitors getting on top – and eventually scoring twice from the 88th minute onwards to salvage a draw.
3) Kaoru Mitoma – 6.88
Mitoma was particularly magnificent in the Spurs comeback. Tottenham had to double mark him as he grew into the game, leaving spaces everywhere else for the likes of Yankubu Minteh, Danny Welbeck and Rutter to exploit.
4) Danny Welbeck – 7.20
Welbz is Dat Guy. A landslide winner of WAB Brighton October 2024 Player of the Month with over 50 percent of the vote after scoring three goals in three appearances. Captained the side with Lewis Dunk out injured. There were even glowing clamours for Welbeck to be recalled to the England squad for the November internationals. Lee Carsley unfortunately bottled it.
5) Yasin Ayari – 6.92
Continues to surprise as part of Hurzeler’s first team squad having hardly pulled up any trees on loan in the Championship last season. Seriously impressive at Newcastle, where he was asked to operate as a defensive winger in a 4-4-2. Brighton nullifying the threat those Saudi Sportswasher pose out wide was a big reason three points were won at St James’ Park.
6) Bart Verbruggen – 6.87
Verbruggen would be a lot higher up the Brighton October Player Ratings had he not been at fault for at least one of the Spurs goals. Three or four quality saves kept Newcastle out in one of the best individual displays given by an Albion goalkeeper for several years.
7) Igor Julio – 6.72
Igor, Igor, Igor! Made the most of opportunities afforded by injuries to Jan Paul van Hecke, then Adam Webster, then Dunk. His renaissance was a highlight of October. Maybe Roberto De Zerbi was not quite as bad at talent identification as the club wanted us all to think?
8) Pervis Estupinan – 6.70
Has been a bit hit-and-miss so far this season but that is to be expected after such a long injury layoff. October was arguably his best month of the campaign with good performances against Spurs and Liverpool.
9) Simon Adingra – 6.67
Continued his impressive form in the League Cup this season with another goal and strong showing in the Liverpool defeat.
10) Lewis Dunk – 6.60
Gave an excellent performance at Newcastle which was like the Dunk of old – including the brilliant forward pass to kick start the move leading to Welbeck’s goal. And for all the talk of Dunk’s powers being on the wane, would the Wolves collapse have happened with his leadership and experience on the pitch?
11) Jan Paul van Hecke – 6.38
A rare example of an Albion player returning from injury earlier than expected. Van Hecke was meant to be out for six weeks but returned after four. A good job too with other defensive options dropping like flies.
12) Brajan Gruda – 6.28
October offered the first significant sightings of the £25 million signing from Mainz. We know so far that he is a relentless presser and possesses enough quality to top the WAB Player Ratings in his only start of October when Brighton bowed out the League Cup to Liverpool.
13) Yankubu Minteh – 6.23
Scored his first Premier League goal to kickstart the comeback against Spurs. A shame for him to have been injured ever since as opening his account would have been a nice confidence booster.
14) Joel Veltman – 6.18
Bit of a surprise to see Veltman so far down the Brighton October 2024 Player Ratings. His lowly position is on account of poor scores across all the Spurs, Wolves and Liverpool matches.
15) Ferdi Kadioglu – 6.12
We included Kadioglu on the six-man shortlist for Player of the Month. Which now looks a little silly with him 15th in the Player Ratings. Played left back, right wing and holding midfield across October as Hurzeler looked to make the most of his versatility.
16) Jack Hinshelwood – 6.08
Not his best. Overrun in midfield during the first half of the Spurs game and was then outshone by Ayari and Baleba at Newcastle.
17) Jason Steele – 6.08
Moments of sheer panic when he had the ball at his feet mixed with some magnificent saves in his one appearance in the League Cup against Liverpool. Standard Steele.
18) Evan Ferguson – 6.05
Back on the goal trail after 11 months without scoring when netting what should have been the killer second against Wolves. Albion and Republic of Ireland fans everywhere will be hoping the goals flow regularly now Ferguson has the monkey off his back.
19) Tariq Lamptey – 5.96
A little strange to see Lamptey so far down the Brighton October 2024 Player Ratings. In his limited game time, he set up Ferguson against Wolves and then scored the second Albion goal against Liverpool.
20) Jakub Moder – 5.75
Failed to make much impact when offered a start in the Liverpool game. One who looks near-certain to move on in either January or the summer.
21) Julio Enciso – 5.58
Has not looked the same player since returning from injury. Theories as to why include a poor attitude and that he is trying too hard. With Pedro back, Enciso’s game time looks even more limited between now and Christmas.
22) Mats Wieffer – 5.26
All he had to do when leading that four-on-one break with Brighton 2-1 ahead against Wolves in the 95th minute was pass to any of the three blue and white shirts alongside him. The rest is history…
23) Adam Webster – 5.00
Hurzeler offered Webster a chance of redemption following his horror show at Chelsea in September’s final game by keeping him in the starting XI for the visit of Spurs to the Amex. An early injury put paid to that, allowed Igor to come off the bench and now surely usurp Webster in the defensive pecking order.
