Brighton FPL Gameweek 28: Maupay & Trossard are better on away days

After two disappointing home defeats against Burnley and Aston Villa, Brighton are back on the road with an away game against Newcastle United in FPL gameweek 28.

And that looks like a positive for Fantasy Premier League managers who own Albion assets. Whereas the Seagulls have won only won of their past 10 matches at the Amex, their record away from home is significantly better with just one defeat from their last seven outings.

That sole loss required a helping hand from the match officials at Old Trafford as well. Having come away from Liverpool, Chelsea, West Ham United and Leicester with something to show for their efforts this season, the Albion have every right to be confident ahead of the 352 mile trip to Tyneside.

This stark and unusual contrast in Brighton home and away form is perhaps best reflected by the FPL points averages of WAB December 2021 Player of the Month Neal Maupay (£6.6 million).

The French striker averages just 2.92 points per game at the Amex this season. However, away from home that jumps to 4.67. He has five goals, two assists and nine bonus points on the road this season from 12 games.

Maupay also loves playing weekend opponents Newcastle. His biggest ever FPL haul came when Brighton won 3-0 at St James’ Park early in the second game of the 2020-21 campaign when he returned 16 points from two goals, one assist and all three bonus points.

Like Maupay, Leandro Trossard (£5.9 million) recorded his best FPL return in a 3-0 win over Newcastle. The Vampire of Genk earned 14 from a goal, assist, clean sheet and the full complement of bonus points when the Toon were hammered in Sussex towards the end of last season.

Trossard too has a better average points per match when playing away from the Amex and he currently ranks tenth in the Influence, Creativity and Threat (ICT) Index. This means that he is amongst the most threatening midfielders in the game.

Many FPL managers will be targeting the six clubs who are about to have a double gameweek. However, with Brighton playing twice in FPL gameweek 29 after this promising away fixture, the Seagulls could be worth early investment.

Captain Fantastic
Double gameweek 28 players will likely be the main captaincy targets. Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins (£7.5 million) and Philippe Coutinho (£6.5 million) could be good options for their fixtures against Southampton and The Leeds United.

The latter have now conceded 20 goals in their last five Premier League matches, including three to Villa in Gameweek 24. That night, Coutinho returned 16 points from one goal, two assists and three bonuses.

If Chelsea or Norwich qualify for the next round of the FA Cup in midweek, their gameweek 30 fixture will be moved to gameweek 28.

This could make Chelsea players excellent captaincy options for a potential double gameweek against Crystal Palace and the Canaries.

Hakim Ziyech (£7.5 million) has returned in each of his last three Premier League fixtures, totalling 31 points in that time. If fit, he could be a great option alongside Mason Mount (£7.5 million).
