Brighton FPL Gameweek 5: Midfielder Trossard brings forward returns
Brighton continued their fantastic start to the 2021-22 campaign in FPL gameweek four, Leandro Trossard scoring the only goal of the game in a 1-0 victory over newly promoted Brentford.
These are heady days for the Seagulls, who sit sixth in the Premier League level on points with Manchester City and Spurs. A major factor in the Albion’s early season success has been the form of their defence, conceding only three goals so far.
Just four top flight sides have shipped fewer and only West Ham (eight) and Manchester City (three) have allowed fewer shots on target than Graham Potter’s troops (10) over the opening four gameweeks.
The strength of Brighton’s defence is no secret. We tipped up Shane Duffy for points at Brentford and Robert Sanchez (£4.5 million) continues to be the most popular goalkeeper in the game, owned by 25.3 percent of managers.
With 16 FPL points, two clean sheets, 39 recoveries (the joint-third best total in the division) and a solid 70 percent save percentage, Sanchez looks to be a perfect budget enabler for the favourable fixtures ahead of the Albion.
Whilst Sanchez was busy recording a shutout against Brentford, it was Trossard (£6.4 million) who stole the limelight for Brighton with his stoppage time winner and 11-point FPL haul.
Trossard is currently owned by just 0.7 percent of managers and could be an excellent differential over the coming weeks.
The Belgian is currently top for goal attempts and penalty box touches across the Brighton team and third for expected goal involvement (xGI).
What makes Trossard particularly attractive is that he is listed as a midfielder in FPL but Potter looks set to use him as a striker following the Albion’s failure to land a new centre forward in the summer transfer window.
Managers searching for a cheaper third forward to enable them to budget for both Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5 million) and Romelu Lukaku (£11.6 million) could do worse than to look at Neal Maupay (£6.5 million).
Maupay is top for xGI among his teammates this season and joint-second for goal attempts. He also registered an assist and five FPL points the last time Brighton last played their gameweek five opponents Leicester City, losing 2-1 at the Amex back in March.
Captain Fantastic
Manchester City head into their gameweek five fixture against Southampton having racked up 11 goals in their last three matches. These 11 goals have been scored by nine different players, making choosing an armband option from the Citizens that bit more difficult.
However, Ferran Torres (£7.1 million) looks like a great differential captaincy pick as City’s current top scorer and his role as an ‘out-of-position’ forward.
Both Mohamed Salah (£12.5 million) and Ronaldo will likely be popular selections as a result of their returns in gameweek four, whilst managers should not overlook Lukaku who plays against a Spurs side missing key defenders through both injury and suspension.
