Brighton FPL Gameweek 6: In-form Maupay to make Palace cry?

Brighton & Hove Albion’s 2-1 win over Leicester City delivered by Neal Maupay and Danny Welbeck in FPL gameweek 5 left the Seagulls flying high in fourth spot in the Premier League, just one point behind Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United.

These are heady times to be an Albion fan and such success on the pitch is seeing Brighton FPL assets increasing in price and popularity – especially with a continued run of gentler fixtures against Crystal Palace, Arsenal and Norwich City over the next three gameweeks.

Shane Duffy (£4.3 million) continues to attract the attention of FPL managers, taking his third price rise of the season following the Leicester game. Having finished second in our WAB August 2021 Player of the Month vote, he is enjoying quite the time of it.

Whilst Brighton did not manage to keep a clean sheet in gameweek 5, Duffy’s assist for the Maupay penalty meant he registered five FPL points for his owners.

Duffy has now returned in three of the Albion’s last four Premier League fixtures and at such a low price, is offering exceptional value for money.

In the aftermath of gameweek 4 and the 1-0 win at Brentford, Leandro Trossard (£6.4 million) ranked top for goal attempts and penalty box touches across the Brighton team and third among his teammates for expected goal involvement (xGI).

He continued this excellent run of form by assisting the other Brighton goal against Leicester, making him second for FPL points across the Albion squad so far this season. Only the aforementioned Duffy has returned more.

Trossard was second amongst midfielders for ‘baseline bonus points’ last weekend, with his pass completion, chance creation, recoveries and dribbles all contributing to a high score.

He was also fifth for crosses across all of FPL for gameweek 5. That is something to bear in mind for future, as underlying stats such as these – as well as goals and assists – are important for players when it comes to gaining actual bonus points.

Brighton have scored seven goals so far this season, the eighth most in the league and a far cry from last year’s xG nightmare. Maupay (£6.5 million) leads the way with three, the same as Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.7 million) and Romelu Lukaku (£11.6 million) and just one fewer than the league’s top scorers.

Maupay has also registered three big chances – again, the same as Lukaku – and he is sixth among forwards for goal conversion on 30 percent.

As a player who tends to thrive against clubs whose supporters do not like him – hello Palace and Arsenal – there is every chance he will continue his hot streak over the next few weeks, making him a great option.

Captain Fantastic
With Chelsea and Manchester City playing each other this weekend, Mo Salah (£12.6 million) is the stand-out captain pick. Salah averages 8.42 points per game against the newly promoted sides and in gameweek 6, Liverpool face new boys Brentford.

Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.7 million) will also likely be a popular captain versus an Aston Villa side who have conceded seven goals in their opening five fixtures. Ronaldo has returned 19 points during his first two gameweeks back in FPL.
