Shane Duffy voted WeAreBrighton.com Player of the Month for August 2018

Aint nobody, like Shane Duffy. Not in August anyway, as the defender was voted our WeAreBrighton.com Player of the Month.

Duffy took 34.47% of the vote to win our first award of the 2018-19 season, holding off the challenges of Glenn Murray in second and Maty Ryan in third.

The Republic of Ireland defender was in particularly impressive form in the final two games of the month. Nobody really shone in the abysmal defeat at Watford, so we can write that one off.

Against Manchester United, Duffy dealt admirably with the threat of Romelu Lukaku. He also had to cope with losing defensive partner Lewis Dunk to injury inside of the first half hour and then, just for good measure, he went and produced a poachers finish at the other end for the Albion’s second goal of the afternoon and his first at the Amex.

There was also a much improved showing all round at Liverpool. Given that in two games against the Reds last season Brighton conceded nine times, to come away with Anfield with just a 1-0 defeat represented a good afternoons work for the back four and Duffy.

Many Albion supporters thought that this would be the season that Murray was gradually phased out by Chris Hughton, but if anything he looks more important than ever as his second placed finish shows. He was a constant menace against United and scored a goal that will rival in technique anything you see in the Premier League this season. That he managed to completely bamboozle David De Gea, one of the best goalkeepers in the world, says everything.

In third came Ryan. The Australian number one didn’t do anything spectacular by his standards in August but that is probably because his standards are so high. Without a few of his interventions then the score at Vicarage Road could have been a lot worse and he also made one improbable save from Roberto Firmino at Anfield.
