Vote for your October 2020 WAB Brighton Player of the Month

Putting together the shortlist for our WeAreBrighton.com October 2020 Brighton & Hove Albion Player of the Month was an altogether different task to the one we faced in September.

Last month, the Seagulls had enjoyed a really encouraging opening six matches to the campaign. They had been valiant in defeat against Chelsea and Manchester United, picked up a superb three points at Newcastle United and the fringe players had provided a lot of excitement with a good run to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

October by contrast was something of a disappointment. There was a 4-2 defeat to early leaders Everton brought about by some woeful defending from set pieces in particular.

It took a 90th minute equaliser from substitute Alexis Mac Allister to rescue a point at Crystal Palace as the Albion misfired in front of goal, putting just three of 20 shots on target and not making enough of their 66 percent possession.

And the less said about the 1-1 draw at home to West Bromwich Albion, the better. After dominating the first half but only having an own goal to show for their efforts, Brighton gave their worst 45 minutes of the season to end up fortunate to escape with a draw against the Baggies – a situation not helped by three very strange substitutions from Graham Potter.

Throw in the fall out from the Premier League and its broadcasters’ decision to charge £15 for fans to watch their club on a PPV basis and the attempted power grab by the big six under the premise of Project Big Picture and you have an October which has left many fans feeling more disconnected from the Albion than they have for 25 years.

The on-the-pitch struggles translates to a strange shortlist for Brighton Player of the Month for October 2020. Mac Allister played just 32 minutes out of 270 and yet he makes it purely for scoring that leveller at Selhurst Park.

Adam Lallana managed 163 minutes and still managed to be arguably the Albion’s best player against both Palace and West Brom and Ben White spent two thirds of the month playing out of position.

Tariq Lamptey, Solly March and Yves Bissouma have all been solid performers so far and it is no surprise to see them nominated, although none really hit the heights they had managed in September. Hardly a shock given that this was a month to forget for the Albion.

The candidates for WeAreBrighton.com October 2020 Brighton Player of the Month

Yves Bissouma
Returned from a three game ban in some style, scoring an absolute cracker away at Everton. He ran the show in the middle of the park against Palace but went onto have a rare off-evening against West Brom.

Adam Lallana
The summer signing from Liverpool is getting better and better with each game he plays. Gave a masterful performance at Palace and looked superb in the first half when West Brom came to the Amex; his withdrawal on the hour mark being one of the major turning points in the Albion throwing three points away.

Tariq Lamptey
A clear and obvious winner of both our September 2020 Brighton Player of the Month and our July 2020 Brighton Player of the Month, the right wingback is looking to become the first ever player to win three in a row. Should he do so, it would be another sign of just what a talented young man the Albion have on their books.

Alexis Mac Allister
His lack of game time so far this season has cost him his spot in the Argentina squad. Finished clinically to nab that 90th minute equaliser at Selhurst Park which is enough to get him onto the shortlist, despite playing for just over half an hour across October.

Solly March
The surprise package of the season continues to look a revelation in Potter’s new wingback formation. Three more solid showings have forced even his harshest critics into having to heap praise upon him and made those who wanted him flogged to Everton, Newcastle, West Ham United, The Leeds United or one of his many other summer suitors look very silly.

Ben White
One of the hottest properties in English football makes the shortlist for the first time in his Brighton career. Spent two of October’s three matches playing out-of-position as a central midfielder. That he controlled the game at Palace and was doing likewise against West Brom until Potter’s tactical reshuffle is a sign of his flexibility.
