Vote now for your April 2021 WAB Brighton Player of the Month

It is hard to know what to make of Brighton & Hove Albion’s efforts in April 2021 and that in turn makes it somewhat difficult to put together a shortlist for our WAB Player of the Month.

On the one hand, not winning a game from four fixtures is bad. On the other, draws against top four chasing Chelsea and Everton is good. And back to that other hand again, a 1-0 defeat away at already relegated Sheffield United can only be describe as a complete shambles.

The Albion could have all but guaranteed Premier League survival had they managed to secure a victory this month. The most likely candidate for such a result was the trip to Sheffield United and as the month’s last match, that is the one that will stick in the memory the most.

To lose at Bramall Lane against a side who have lost 26 out of 32 games this season was a farce. There was much to like though in the way that Brighton should have had a point at Manchester United were it not for more VAR controversy against the Red Devils and the manner in which they played versus Chelsea and Everton, both of whom they could have beaten with a bit more luck.

The defence features heavily in our April 2021 Player of the Month shortlist, hardly a surprise given Brighton only conceded three goals from their four outings.

Less impressive was the Albion’s output at the other end, where Danny Welbeck was the only man to score. Dat Guy did not do much else other than notch at Old Trafford and so he fails to make the frame, meaning none of the contenders scored a goal. Story of Brighton’s season, really…

The candidates for WeAreBrighton.com April 2021 Brighton Player of the Month

Yves Bissouma
After a couple of below par months, the midfielder was back to his best in April 2021 with dominating displays that marked him out as Brighton’s star performer against Chelsea and Sheffield United. It would be a real surprise to see him in an Albion shirt next season as surely one of the big boys will be forking out a fee with many zeros on it this summer.

Lewis Dunk
Marshalled the defence to two clean sheets against the dangerous attacking threats carried by Everton and Chelsea. He topped our WAB Player Ratings with his performance at Stamford Bridge, being the most super player on show against the European Super League founders. With Gareth Southgate now able to pick a 26 man squad for Euro 2020 rather than the normal 23, there are even less excuses for the England boss not to take Dunk to the tournament.

Adam Lallana
Not quite the unplayable force he was when sweeping to the March Player of the Month award. He still ran the show at Old Trafford and impressed against Everton. Rested against Chelsea, but even then he managed to be at the heart of most of Brighton’s positive play as they dominated the final 20 minutes once he had been introduced from the bench.

Robert Sanchez
Shutouts against Everton and Chelsea have secured his place on the shortlist, but he was not overly worked in securing his clean sheet bonus in either of those matches.

Joel Veltman
Mr 7 out of 10 was his normal dependable self, whether Graham Potter used him as a left sided centre back or at right wing back. Like his defensive colleagues Dunk and Ben White, his best display came at Chelsea.

Ben White
Three really good performances before he was forced to sit out the Sheffield United game through suspension. That came about via a selfless red card in the final seconds against Chelsea, preventing Callum Hudson-Odoi from having a free run at Sanchez’s goal. The definition of tactical foul and a sign of his footballing intelligence.
