Yves Bissouma voted WAB December 2020 Brighton Player of the Month
Another month, another outstanding set of performances from Yves Bissouma as the midfielder was voted our WAB December 2020 Brighton Player of the Month in convincing style.
Bissouma picked up over 43% of the vote to finish a long way ahead of Solly March, who was looking to become the first ever man to win three consecutive Player of the Month awards in the 10 years we have been running the awards.
It was a December in which Bissouma went from strength to strength, getting better with each passing match he played in a Brighton shirt with his two most impressive games coming at the end of the month.
Bissouma was easily the best player on the pitch in the 2-2 draw with West Ham United, no mean feat given that he was up against the Hammers’ own prodigious and highly-sought after midfielder Declan Rice.
He then covered every blade of grass in a dominating showing against Arsenal, one of the clubs who were heavily linked with Bissouma throughout the month alongside Manchester United, Liverpool and Real Madrid.
If he were to leave this January, then it would take a seriously big bid to prise him away from the Amex. Selling Bissouma now could be the difference between Brighton staying in the Premier League and returning to the Championship and given that the difference between the two divisions is hundreds of millions of pounds in income, well, you can see how much Bissouma is worth.
Equally important but not attracting anywhere near as much attention is March. Having won both our WAB October Player of the Month and WAB November Player of the Month awards, the left wing back was chasing an historic hat-trick.
He could not get close to Bissouma in December however, instead having to settle for being Brighton’s second best player with 19.91% of the vote.
March’s best performance came in the 0-0 draw away at Fulham, where he was a constant menace. When he was rested for the defeat to Arsenal, you realised just how much he brings to the party.
Bissouma and March aside, it was a pretty woeful month for the Albion. No victories despite facing struggling Fulham, Sheffield United and Arsenal sides is indicative of that, but perhaps more damning is the identity of the man who finished third in the December Player of the Month poll.
Sheffield United’s John Lundstram was only involved for 33 minutes when the Blades came to the Amex Stadium before his clattering challenge on Joel Veltman saw him shown a straight red card.
Had United not been forced to play for the best part of an hour with only 10 men, there is every chance that Brighton’s embarrassing 1-1 draw with a side who came into the clash having taken just one point from 13 matches would have been even more shameful.
Albion supporters have recognised Lundstram’s contribution to ensuring the Seagulls did not become the only side to lose to the Blades so far in the 2020-21 season.
