Seagulls soar into fourth: Photos from Brighton 2-1 Leicester City

These are heady days for Brighton fans and ones which we feel the need to document via photos, lest people assume in 50 years time that the Albion sitting fourth in the Premier League table after beating Leicester City 2-1 was actually some kind of dream.

We can assure you right now that it is not. Okay, so the Seagulls needed the helping hand of a contentious penalty decision and an eagle eyed linesman to rule two Leicester goals out for offside, but surely Brighton have earned a little bit of luck after last season’s xG nightmare?

Neal Maupay converted the controversial first half spot kick following a handball by Jannik Vestergaard from a Shane Duffy header. Danny Welbeck then doubled the advantage, flicking home a Leandro Trossard free kick five minutes in the second half.

Going 2-0 behind seemed to spark Leicester into life and it was rather like the Alamo from that point on. Jamie Vardy pulled one back and the Foxes put the ball in Robert Sanchez’s goal from corners on two further occasions, only for Harvey Barnes to be offside both times.

The roar that greeted the full time whistle was as if the Albion had just won the Champions League. Perhaps that should not have been a surprise; after all, the game did set a new Amex Stadium attendance record of 31,078, continuing on from the huge numbers who attended Brighton 2-0 Everton in the Albion’s previous home fixture.

Graham Potter said the crowd helped his players over the line in the second half. It was tense, it was anxious and it required copious amounts of beer to be drunk to steady the nerves afterwards. The things we do for this football club.

Most important of all though, it was another three points. Anyone else get the feeling that something special is being built on the south coast this season?
