Leicester 3-0 Brighton: Albion fans award some pretty grim player ratings
There were no punches pulled when it came to the ratings you awarded Brighton & Hove Albion’s players for their efforts in losing 3-0 away at Leicester City.
Only Yves Bissouma scored above a six on his way to being rated as Brighton’s best player in defeat for the second week running. Just three players managed to achieve a rating over five – Solly March, Joel Veltman and Ben White trailing in Bissouma’s wake.
At the other end of the charts, Maty Ryan’s error for Leicester’s opener shone an even brighter spotlight on his recent poor form. Despite that and his position as the boo boys news favourite, Ryan still found himself somehow eclipsed by Big Dan Burn who managed to record the lowest player rating of the season so far.
Impressive stuff all round with this pretty grim collection of scores ensuring that Leicester City 3-0 Brighton overtakes the 0-0 draw with West Bromwich Albion as the game with the lowest average player ratings of the 2020-21 campaign.
Maty Ryan – 3.44
His Sunday night at the King Power was defined by James Maddison’s opening goal which he should have done much better with, even if the shot did take a deflection on the way through. That error – coupled with the fact that he has become the boo boys new favourite – overshadowed some decent stops which prevented the scoreline becoming even more embarrassing.
Joel Veltman – 5.16
The highest scoring Albion defender in the Leicester 3-0 Brighton player ratings, not that it is much of an achievement. Had a testing evening once Brendan Rodgers switched 4-2-3-1 to target the Albion’s full backs with little support from any of the midfield for his defensive duties.
Lewis Dunk – 4.36
Looked like he was suffering from shellshock in his post match interview. Hardly a surprise given the chaos and confusion that took place around him when Leicester blitzed their three goals in 17 minutes.
Dan Burn – 2.60
In a way, recording a score of 2.60 is seriously impressive. Not even Neal Maupay was rated that low when he missed a penalty and subbed himself off in the 1-1 draw with Liverpool a fortnight ago. As soon as Rodgers’ formation change put pressure on him, he looked like a fish out of water with Leicester’s first two goals coming from down his flank.
YVES BISSOUMA – 6.32
Having been the only Brighton player to emerge from last week’s 2-1 defeat to Southampton with any credit, the midfielder again topped the player ratings. Tried to make things happen, attempted a couple of long distance drives and looked like one of the few individuals who actually cared.
Pascal Gross – 4.48
After scoring twice and registering two assists in his previous five games as a number 10 and advanced central midfielder, Potter decided to use the German playmaker as a holding midfielder. That baffling positional switch led Gross to record his lowest score of the season.
Alireza Jahanbakhsh – 4.36
Prince Ali was involved in Brighton’s two best moments, seeing a shot saved by Kasper Schmeichel and then playing the pass which slipped in Danny Welbeck for his squandered one-on-one. Faded after that and was about as useful as a pair of sunglasses on a bloke with one ear in terms of helping out Veltman defensively.
Neal Maupay – 3.84
Started a little deeper than normal before pushing forward into a more familiar centre forward role. Had one chance but it was a difficult one as his overhead kick provided a routine save for Schmeichel.
Solly March – 5.24
Had more freedom to attack than he is normally afforded from his left wing back role. He was as lively a presence as Brighton had in their 3-0 defeat to Leicester, explaining why he was the second highest rated player in the ratings.
Danny Welbeck – 3.92
He seems to have been infected by whatever is in the water at the Amex that causes strikers to turn to jelly whenever they get a sight of goal. Missed a glorious one-on-one with Schmeichel at 0-0 which, had he scored, might have resulted in a very different game.
Steve Alzate – 4.16
The lesser seen Steve Alzate looks like he is finally being forgiven by Graham Potter for running over the manager’s cat or whatever crime it is he committed to be so ruthlessly discarded since October. Did not do an awful lot, but it was still good to be reminded that he is alive.
Aaron Connolly – 3.60
With Leicester being forced into naming a makeshift defence who play a high line, Connolly could have had a lot of joy running in behind as he did against Liverpool. Potter therefore decided to name him on the bench. When he did come on, did next to bugger all.
Alexis Mac Allister – 3.88
Had little chance to make an impression as he came on for his first appearance since contracting coronavirus. Leicester were well in control by time he entered as the Foxes saw the game out in about as comfortable a manner as you can imagine.
