How it happened: Liverpool 2-2 Brighton & Hove Albion

This weekend saw Brighton & Hove Albion play at Anfield against an undefeated Liverpool side who were fresh from beating their arch rivals Manchester United 5-0 at Old Trafford.

Graham Potter fielded a different stating XI to his usual side with a slight change in formation, switching from 3-4-3 to a back four in anticipation of the attacking threat that Liverpool possess.

Leandro Trossard was named as the lead striker supported by Solly March with Neal Maupay on the bench. Yves Bissouma, Enock Mwepu, Adam Lallana and Jakub Moder all started in a packed central midfield to provide more defensive cover. Here is How it Happened:

Liverpool got off to a flying start, taking a very early lead. It looked ominous for Brighton and left Seagulls fans feeling dread that this could be a repeat of last week’s 4-1 defeat to Manchester City.

Jordan Henderson was the goal scorer in the fourth minute, giving the Reds the advantage. 20 minutes later and Liverpool doubled their lead at the hands of Sadio Mane, making the score 2-0. There was still plenty of time remaining in the game for either Liverpool to run riot or Brighton to find a way back.

It was the latter which happened. The Seagulls sought to bring about a response and change the course of events. They began building pressure and countering Liverpool.

Bissouma came close with a shot hitting the post before it was the Zambian Mwepu who struck for Brighton, bringing the Liverpool lead down just to a single goal before the half time break.

It was clear to see that Potter had motivated his team effectively during the half time break as the Seagulls came out looking to take the game to Liverpool.

After a series of attempts including one saved from Lallana, Trossard was successful and scored in the 65th minute to level the game and make it Liverpool 2-2 Brighton, much to the surprise of the home fans.

Brighton managed well to see out the rest of the game and secure a well deserved point at Anfield against a formidable Liverpool side. I am sure a majority of Seagull supporters would have taken a draw without hesitation beforehand.

Brighton currently sit at 16 points and in seventh place despite having faced a difficult couple of matches back-to-back against Man City and Liverpool.

The Albion can now look forward to next week’s fixture against Newcastle on the 6th of November. Brighton have not been victorious since mid-September in the Premier League, but Potter will definitely be eyeing the visit of the Toon Army as a chance to get back to winning ways. Stay tuned for more How it Happened.
