Liverpool 3-3 Brighton: Treble scoring Trossard tops ratings

There were no surprises at the top of the Liverpool 3-3 Brighton player ratings. Treble scoring Leandro Trossard led the way, with the only shock being that he was not awarded a perfect 10 for his history-making hat-trick. You lot are harsh judges.

Trossard instead had to settle for a score of 9.89, 0.11 points from the first ever WAB Player Ratings 10. The elusive full marks may not be far away, especially for a forward if the Albion keep scoring and entertaining in all-out attacking De ZerbiBall.

Such brave and brash football from Roberto De Zerbi is likely to have an impact on scores at the other end. The Albion were left wide open at times defensively, something Lewis Dunk in particular struggled with.

His 6.22 was the worst of the Albion ratings in Liverpool 3-3 Brighton, coming up against an in-form Roberto Firmino. Joel Veltman coped better with Mo Salah, whilst Robert Sanchez was a mixture of clangers and points-earning saves.

One thing we can say with absolute certainty is that the Albion will not be boring to watch under De Zerbi. Here are your player ratings from Liverpool 3-3 Brighton and the start of a brand new era in Seagulls history.

Robert Sanchez – 5.89
This low score presumably comes from the catastrophic cock up which gifted Liverpool their third goal. Whilst flapping an easy catch into the back of his own defender was pretty unforgivable, it should not completely overshadow a fine first half save from Salah followed by that world class fingertip stop of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s free kick in the final minute.

Joel Veltman – 7.33
De Zerbi said in the run-up to the game that central defenders were the most important players on the pitch for the way he wishes to play. Veltman was the best of the back three, making some important interventions and doing well to nullify the threat posed by Salah.

Lewis Dunk – 6.22
An obvious consequence of Brighton being much more attacking under De Zerbi than they were with Graham Potter at the helm is that the defence are going to have a lot more work to do. Unusually, Dunk found that something of a struggle at Anfield as he was given a bit of a run around by the brace-scoring Firmino.

Adam Webster – 7.00
Did okay defensively. He had some important moments in possession, including in the build up to the third Brighton goal. His ability and willingness to stride into midfield with the ball at his feet was not seen too much, but it is sure to be a weapon De Zerbi appreciates in games against lesser Premier League opponents than Liverpool when Brighton can be even more attacking.

Solly March – 7.78
De Zerbi went out of his way to mention March as a player he was looking forward to working with. March responded by being at the heart of everything the Albion did in that blistering opening 15 minute spell. Involved in the first goal, assisted the second and would have claimed another assist had his cross been headed anywhere other than straight at Alisson by Danny Welbeck.

Moises Caicedo – 8.11
Liverpool are known to be interested in signing Caicedo, although there £45 million valuation will buy just his boots as Potter famously said just before running off to Chelsea. If this were an audition for a move to Anfield, then the good news for the Albion is that the future Ballon d’Or winner did not do anything too spectacular to catch the eye. Instead, it was a disciplined shielding job in front of the back three with lots of good use of the ball.

Alexis Mac Allister – 9.00
Mac Allister’s role seemed to have gone under the radar a little bit, so it is pleasing to see him achieve the second highest score in the Liverpool 3-3 Brighton player ratings. Some lovely touches helped move the ball into space for Trossard to open the scoring. That was a theme throughout, where his clever play and ability to pick a pass helped the Albion maneuverer out of some tight areas. One to watch under De Zerbi.

Pervis Estupinan – 7.78
Deserves a 10 for picking up a time wasting booking inside of 30 minutes. The exact sort of nonsense we need to see more of. His defensive game has looked dodgy since his £15 million arrival from Villarreal. De Zerbi wanting to attack, attack, attack might well hide that weakness. He used this new-found freedom to regularly reach the by-line, including when hooking over the second half cross which Welbeck met with a header brilliantly saved by Alisson.

Pascal Gross – 7.33
Solid enough but not close to the admittedly ridiculously high standards he had set over the opening six games of the season. His ability to cover an insane amount of ground through sheer natural fitness looks like it will be important given the intensity De Zerbi demands.

LEANDRO TROSSARD – 9.89
What can you say? Three clinically despatched strikes all with his left foot made Trossard the first Albion player to score a top flight hat-trick since Gordon Smith in 1980. Liverpool could not live with him and had it not been for a great Alisson save, he would have emulated Andriy Arshavin and scored four times at Anfield. Maybe that would have earned him a perfect 10 in the Liverpool 3-3 Brighton ratings?

Danny Welbeck – 7.67
Played a part in all three goals, most notably with that delicious back heel to Trossard for the opener. His score suffers though by failing to find the back of the net himself, which he should have done with at least one of those free headers he had in either half.

Kaoru Mitoma – 8.00
Jurgen Klopp stood against those critics who had questioned Alexander-Arnold’s defensive ability earlier in the week. The Liverpool boss was made to look a little silly in those comments when Mitoma entered the fray and began running rings around the Reds right back. Such an exciting player to watch coming off the bench.

Adam Lallana – 6.56
Usually when he comes on against Liverpool, he hobbles off again after less than 10 minutes. This time he managed to last a lot longer, offering control on the ball as the Albion sought to turn the tide following Liverpool taking the lead with their best spell of the afternoon.
