Leicester 2-2 Brighton: Lamptey good, rest rubbish in player ratings

Well, that was quite an afternoon at the King Power Stadium. Squandering a 2-0 lead with five minutes plus injury time remaining means another set of very low player ratings from Leicester City 2-2 Brighton.

The Albion’s opening goal getter Tariq Lamptey was the only member of the starting XI to score higher than a six. Substitute and fellow scorer Yankubu Minteh joined Lamptey in that club following his introduction, but it was otherwise low numbers all round.

Which tells you just how spectacularly terrible this latest collapse was. Because the opening 80 minutes wasn’t actually that bad.

Brighton dominated the first half and had they been more clinical in front of goal, could have been three or four ahead. How would these player ratings look then?

But instead of killing the game off before the interval, the Albion found themselves traipsing back down the M1 with only a point for their efforts after capitulating to late Jamie Vardy and Bobby De Cordova-Reid strikes.

Here are your Leicester 2-2 Brighton player ratings.

Bart Verbruggen – 5.33

His only real action other than picking the ball out of the back of the net twice from the 85th minute onwards was to make a smart first half save from James Justin.

TARIQ LAMPTEY – 7.17

Lovely goal bent into the very top corner with his left foot after cutting in off the right flank. Two goals and two assists from seven appearances so far this campaign is a good return… and one which feels like it has gone under the radar somewhat.

Jan Paul van Hecke – 5.83

Made a couple of vital interventions to prevent dangerous attacks from Vardy and Kasey McAteer. Lost Vardy for the first Leicester goal though, making it a bit of a surprise that Van Hecke posted the second-highest score of the starting XI in the Leicester 2-2 Brighton ratings.

Lewis Dunk – 5.33

Some Albion fans put Brighton shipping two late goals against Wolves six weeks ago down to the absence of Dunk’s leadership. Yet the Seagulls skipper was on the pitch here and the team still fell apart.

Pervis Estupinan – 5.17

Along with Lamptey, Estupinan came in for praise from Ashley Williams on Match of the Day for his performance. You lot clearly didn’t agree, making him the lowest scoring defender despite setting up Lamptey and forcing Foxes goalkeeper Mads Hermansen into a decent save.

Carlos Baleba – 5.00

Badly let himself and his teammates down with that first half yellow card for waving an imaginary card in an attempt to get a Leicester player booked. Hurzeler subsequently withdraw Baleba at half time to prevent him being sent off. Might the final score have been different if Baleba completed the 90?

Yasin Ayari – 5.17

Some diligent work in midfield during his hour on the pitch, during which the Albion were by-and-large the better team.

Georginio Rutter – 5.33

Never stopped pressing but it didn’t really happen for him in an attacking sense on his return to the side after being rested at Fulham.

Joao Pedro – 4.83

We probably should have known it wasn’t going to be Brighton’s day when the normally reliable Pedro missed the sort of first half chance he usually gobbles up for breakfast.

Kaoru Mitoma – 4.50

Blazed wastefully over from 10 yards when he should have worked Hermansen at the very least. Otherwise ineffective through a combination of the Albion struggling to get him into the game and him losing possession on the rare occasions they did.

Evan Ferguson – 4.00

This was the Irishman’s big opportunity to impress with Danny Welbeck only deemed fit enough for a place on the bench. Looked a shadow of the player who scored a cracking late equaliser last time Brighton visited the King Power back in January 2023.

Mats Wieffer – 6.17

Replaced Baleba at the break and ended up giving his best performance yet as a Brighton player. Good on the ball and played a delightful pass to set up Minteh.

Matt O’Riley – 4.50

Offered very little after coming on for Ayari. Not entirely convinced he is suited to being a holding midfielder in Fabian Hurzeler’s 4-2-3-1 formation.

Yankubu Minteh – 6.67

Magnificent goal as he tricked and teased a couple of Leicester defenders, putting one on the ground before firing beyond Hermansen. Deserved to be the match winner but Brighton had other ideas.

Danny Welbeck – 4.33

Back from a minor injury which forced him to miss the Fulham game. Good to get some minutes in his legs as the Albion will be relying upon him in the big one against Crystal Palace next weekend.

Igor Julio – 0.83

The lowest ever score in WAB Player Ratings history. To be fair to Igor, his mazy run out of defence with Brighton defending a one-goal lead in the 91st minute was going alright as he glided past the first two Leicester players. It was trying to take on a third which proved a bit ambitious.
