Aston Villa 6-1 Brighton: Pedro & Fati lead a rubbish set of ratings

Where do you even start with the analysis of these player ratings from Aston Villa 6-1 Brighton? There was certainly no holding back from Albion fans submitting their scores.

Which we suppose should not come as a surprise. The Albion conceded three times in 12 first half minutes, put a comical own goal into their net and left gaps in their midfield and defence wide enough to sail the QE2 through.

The only time Brighton looked remotely like the team we have come to love and adore under Roberto De Zerbi was during 25 minutes at the beginning of the second half.

This was largely thanks to the introductions from the bench of Joao Pedro and Ansu Fati. Within five minutes of entering proceedings, the former teed up the latter for his first Albion goal to make it 3-1.

There was the briefest flicker of hope that a comeback could be on… until Villa went and racked up another three goals.

Not for the faint-hearted, here are your Aston Villa 6-1 Brighton player ratings.

Jason Steele – 2.56
Developed a touch of the Wayne Hendersons as every save he did make was parried straight to a Villa player who tucked home the rebound.

Joel Veltman – 3.78
You know it is bad when the normally dependable Dutchman has a woeful game. Gave away the ball for Villa to break and score their second and was then unable to recover the situation when making it back to the box, only for Watkins to leave him dazed and confused.

Adam Webster – 2.11
Player who famously needs a run of games to find his best form in struggling to find best form whilst De Zerbi chops and changes centre backs every week shocker.

Lewis Dunk – 3.67
Started the game like someone had put ketamine in his cornflakes, being caught in bad positions and producing unusually sloppy passes. Typical he chose to drop a performance like that with Gareth Southgate in the stands.

Pervis Estupinan – 1.89
Had a chance to put the Albion ahead in the opening five minutes but given the ease with which Villa sauntered through the Albion midfield and defence, it is doubtful whether that would have led to a different outcome. His comical own goal for Villa’s third summed things up nicely and leaves him bottom of the Aston Villa 6-1 Brighton ratings.

Billy Gilmour – 5.11
Great pass to put Estupinan in for that early opportunity. Other than that, he found himself completely overrun in the middle.

Jack Hinshelwood – 3.67
The 18-year-old was handed a surprise full Premier League debut. He and Gilmour were far too lightweight to cope with Villa but he still displayed some nice touches and decent use of the ball in amongst all the chaos.

Solly March – 4.33
Like Dunk, not a good day for him to be ineffective with Southgate watching on. Should have done better with a first half header put over the bar from close range.

Danny Welbeck – 2.78
We have said it before that Welbeck playing as a number 10 behind Evan Ferguson does not work. Hopefully, we will not need to say it again as De Zerbi realises himself and stops playing them in the same starting XI.

Kaoru Mitoma – 3.78
Caught out defensively by Matty Cash for the first Villa goal, although Mitoma might wonder where Estupinan had disappeared to. Pretty anonymous in an attacking sense.

Evan Ferguson – 4.22
Went off at half time. Barely saw the ball during his 45 minutes due to it being like the Alamo down the other end. His half-decent score in the Aston Villa 6-1 Brighton ratings must be due to the fact he was so anonymous as to do nothing terrible.

JOAO PEDRO – 6.22
His introduction along with Fati did at least spark a bit of life in Brighton for all of 20 second half minutes. Good work to set up the Albion consolation.

Ansu Fati – 5.78
Caused Villa some problems and put himself in the right place at the right time to tap in his first Albion goal. Cannot imagine when he signed from Barcelona he thought that moment would come in a 6-1 defeat at Aston Villa.

Tariq Lamptey – 5.11
Took over from Estupinan at left back, presumably because De Zerbi had one eye on saving the Ecuadorian international for Marseille on Thursday night. Lamptey was decent enough compared to everyone else.

Simon Adingra – 4.89
Got half hour from the bench once March was put out of his misery and taken off. Came close to adding a second consolation with a decent effort.

Carlos Baleba – 3.78
It seems strange that De Zerbi says Baleba needs minutes to get up to speed in the Premier League. Then in a game which has long been over and therefore presents the opportunity to get some in the tank, he comes on for only four minutes.
