Newcastle 0-3 Brighton: Player ratings from the perfect Albion performance

Brighton & Hove Albion were a bit good at St James’ Park, weren’t they? Tariq Lamptey may have been the star of the show to top our WAB player ratings, but all 11 men in Brighton blue deserved praise for the brutal manner in which they dismantled Newcastle United 0-3 on Tyneside.

Lamptey’s score of 9.33 probably won’t be beaten this season. Yves Bissouma managed to notch the third highest score behind Lamptey despite being red carded with brace-scorer Neal Maupay in second.

No Albion player was marked below 7.08, the score achieved by Maty Ryan who had literally nothing to do other than claim a few crosses. That was how dominant the Albion were in arguably their most complete performance of the Graham Potter era so far.

Here are the WAB Player Ratings from Newcastle United 0-3 Brighton:

Maty Ryan – 7.08
Won’t have an easier afternoon this season. The job of the midfield and defence in front of him meant that he simply had to catch a few crosses into the box. So underemployed that he could have whipped out an iPad, watched six episodes of Home & Away on catch up and cooked some shrimp on the barbie.

Adam Webster – 7.33
Both he and Lewis Dunk struggled last season against target men in the mould of Andy Carroll and Callum Wilson. To see him enjoy such a comfortable 90 minutes was a good sign.

Lewis Dunk – 7.67
Allowed Wilson a free header on goal which Newcastle’s £20 million man thankfully put off target. Other than that, it was a typically dependable performance from the Albion captain.

Ben White – 7.92
Scored the highest ratings of the Brighton back three for the 0-3 win over Newcastle. Pinged some lovely passes around and even had a stint at right back – a potentially interesting development if Potter opts to revert to a back four at some point.

TARIQ LAMPTEY – 9.33
A future Ballon d’Or winner based on this. Enjoy him while you can people; it won’t belong before one of the big boys comes knocking with an £80 million bid and he goes onto win every trophy in football.

Steve Alzate – 7.75
Has looked extremely accomplished in the middle of the park so far this season. Comfortable on the ball, his partnership with Yves Bissouma was one of the aspects of this performance that did not get the praise it deserved because of Lamptey’s mesmerising showing.

Yves Bissouma – 8.58
That a player who got sent off for kicking an opponent in the face was scored second best in the Brighton player ratings for the 0-3 win at Newcastle tells you everything about how well he played. Losing him for three games is a massive blow; that two of those could be League Cup ties if Brighton beat Preston North End makes Wednesday’s trip to Deepdale seem more important.

Solly March – 7.42
Did not hit the heights he managed in Brighton’s 3-1 defeat to Chelsea on Monday, but he was still a solid performer at left wing back. If Potter persists with three at the back, he may have just found his place in the starting line up.

Leandro Trossard – 7.92
Enjoyed himself out on the right of the front three, claiming an assist for Neal Maupay’s second of the afternoon and rattling a post in the second half. Starting to back up the flashes of promise we saw in his debut season.

Neal Maupay – 8.83
Oh la la. Le Petit French Shithouse showed a welcome return to from after a difficult pre-season and a pretty woeful showing against Chelsea. Despatched a penalty, scored another with a lovely little flick and set up Aaron Connolly for the third.

Aaron Connolly – 7.92
His second half finish had shades of a young Wayne Rooney and means that three of four Premier League goals have now come when cutting in from the left. One to tell all the girls about next time he in Shoosh.

Dan Burn – 6.50
Came on for Lamptey after Potter decided that 60 minutes of the teenage right back having lumps kicked out of him was enough. His arrival necessitated the change to 4-4-2 and he did not put a foot wrong once on the pitch.
