Wieffer training, Baleba a maybe: Brighton v Chelsea team news
There was some rare positive team news from Fabian Hurzeler ahead of Brighton welcoming Chelsea to the Amex in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
The Youngest Permanent Manager in Premier League History confirmed that Mats Wieffer is back in training and Carlos Baleba may be fit enough for involvement against the Blues.
Wieffer has not been seen since limping off 30 seconds after scoring against West Ham United in December. The Dutch midfielder leaving the field so soon after his first Albion goal sums up the injury problems Brighton have faced so far this season.
Baleba meanwhile missed last Saturday’s 7-0 humiliation at Nottingham Forest. Without him or Yasin Ayari available to patrol the midfield, Hurzeler took the somewhat interesting decision to play only Jack Hinshelwood against three central Tricky Trees players in Nuno’s 3-5-2 formation.
The car crash which followed showed both the naivety of Hurzeler’s approach and the importance of Baleba to Brighton.
Hammering home the second of those points was the fact that half time midfielder introductions Matt O’Riley and Diego Gomez were unable to rectify the situation. In fact, the Albion shipped four goals after the break compared with three through the first half.
Ayari also has a chance of facing Chelsea whilst Pervis Estupinan could return. Having an actual midfield and a natural left back this weekend can help give Brighton’s chance of progressing to round five a real boost.
In terms of what else to expect in Brighton versus Chelsea team news, new £9 million defender Eiran Cashin has impressed in training and could make his Albion debut.
One player who definitely will not be making his Brighton bow is Carl Rushworth. The goalkeeper has been recalled from a loan spell at Hull City to provide backup to Bart Verbruggen after Jason Steele underwent shoulder surgery.
Rushworth though played for the Tigers in their shock third round elimination by League Two side Doncaster Rovers. Meaning he is now cup tied.
Verbruggen therefore looks certain to make a rare cup appearance between the posts. Unless Hurzeler throws a curveball and opts to start Tom McGill.
Tom McGill has been recalled from his loan at MK Dons and will now re-join the Albion squad after a successful loan period in the first half of the season.

In the process, McGill would become the first ever man with only one leg to play in goal for the Albion.
At 24-years old, McGill is still waiting his Brighton debut. Like Rushworth, he has just been recalled from a Football League loan spell having played 25 times as number one for MK Dons so far this season.
It would be interesting to know the rationale behind the decision. Bringing McGill back to the Amex to be third choice when he was starting every week for MK Dons seems strange on the surface.
If the Albion end up losing to Chelsea and there is nothing preventing Rushworth sitting on the bench, McGill will have been recalled for just the one appearance in the matchday squad as an unused substitute.
Hurzeler offered little indication over how seriously he would be taking the tie, beyond repeating his welcome assertion from before the previous round that the FA Cup is a trophy to be won.
And Hurzeler was good as his word for that trip to Norwich City. An almost full strength XI eased past the Canaries, winning 4-0 at Carrow Road.
If Hurzeler was willing to show the competition and Championship opponents such respect, then logic suggests he will stick with his best possible team for the visit of a Chelsea side in the Premier League top four.
The Blues with their billion pound squad can afford to make wholesale changes with little drop off in quality. But if an entire new XI makes for unfamiliarity in the Chelsea ranks, Brighton will hope to take advantage.
At least we know it cannot be any worse than last week’s heaviest league defeat in 67 years… can it?
