Brighton and Hove Albion reveal new kits for 2018-19

Brighton and Hove Albion have revealed their brand new home and “alternative” kits ahead of the 2018-19 Premier League season, with the club set to wear a green away from home for the first time since 1976.

The home kit remains the traditional blue and white stripes although Nike have attempted to freshen things up, going with three wide blue stripes with white sleeves in a similar design to last home shirt of the Errea era, worn in Oscar Garcia’s season in charge.

The back of the home shirt is largely white with stripes covering the bottom fifth a red trim at the top. White shorts will be worn for the first time at the Amex along with blue shorts, a combination that proved to be extremely popular during the first two seasons at Withdean.

You could be forgiven for mistaking the new away kit for a goalkeepers shirt at first glance given that it is all green and looks suspiciously like the sort of generic Nike kit you would see being sported by a 16 stone goalkeeper playing for a pub team at Waterhall on a Sunday morning.

The Albion have said it is a throwback to the colours first worn by Brighton United, the cities first professional club who wore green in the 1898-99 season and followed that up with a delightful green and white striped kit in 1899-00 before being wound up to be replaced by Brighton and Hove Rangers who eventually became the Albion we know today.

In slightly more modern times, green was used as an away kit during the 1975/76 season under the first Peter Taylor, with Peter Ward wearing it for his goal scoring debut away at Hereford in March 1976.

The club have said that the green kit will be worn with white shorts and white socks, but given that by our reckoning nine of the 20 clubs in the Premier League wear white shorts at home, it is far more likely to be deployed as an all green number.

Just like last seasons leaking of the away kit, this years kits also appeared online prior to their official release at 2pm although the fact they only appeared in the public domain a few hours before as opposed to six days represents a big improvement on last year.

An announcement about the new goalkeepers kits to be worn by Maty Ryan and new signings David Button and Jason Steele is due on Friday.
