Here is a little look back at some of the Seagulls’ most legacy-building matches in recent years, between their days in the lower leagues and their success in the Premier League.

1. The FA Cup History 1983 FA Cup Final

The 1983 FA Cup Final vs Manchester United is perhaps the most iconic game in Brighton history. This was a key match for several reasons. Brighton rallied from being the underdogs into the final to display their character and a load of ability.

There was a replay to come after the game ended 2-2. Brighton would go on to lose the replay 4-0, but what transpired in the final was the battling spirit of Brighton, and that day became a defining moment for the club. This match is also much referred back to by many fans as a sign of the hope and ambition of the club.

2. The Heart-Wrenching 2016 Championship Playoff Semi Final

Before their Premier League ascent, Brighton faced Sheffield Wednesday in the 2016 Championship Playoff Semi Finals. The first leg took place at Hillsborough but four injuries ruined the Segulls’ chances as they lost 2-0.

Brighton managed to scrape together a team for the second leg a few days later and although that game finished in a 1-1 draw, it was not enough to progress to Wembley. Wednesday instead went through to the final, where they lost to Hull City.

This emotional defeat was hard for fans and players alike but served as motivation for future campaigns.

3. The Ascent to Premier League Glory

The team was promoted to the Premier League in 2017. That day, April 17, 2017, they clinched promotion to the top flight with a decisive victory over Wigan Athletic.

A 2-1 win at the Amex Stadium secured their promotion but also ushered in a new era for Brighton. The atmosphere was right, with fans celebrating their return to the Premier League after an absence of 34 years.

4. The 2019 Victory Over Manchester United

One of Brighton’s most memorable performances in recent years came when when they faced Manchester United at home during the 2018-2019 Premier League season.

Brighton secured a fine 3-2 win at the Amex on August 19 2018, in an exhilarating encounter. But this match not only showcased Brighton’s attacking prowess but also their ability to compete against some of the league’s best teams.

Brighton & Hove Albion has experienced its fair share of highs and lows throughout its history, and each iconic game writes its own chapter into the club’s narrative.
