Bruno signs new Brighton and Hove Albion deal
BRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO has signed a new contract with Brighton and Hove Albion with the veteran right back putting pen to paper on a deal through to the summer of 2019.
The Albion’s club captain was due to be out of contract come the end of this season and a combination of him nearing the age at which you can draw a state pension and his recent replacement in the team by Ezequiel Schelotto led some to think this could be his last season in the stripes.
Not so Chris Hughton who has taken the decision to extend his stay into a seventh season at the Amex. Bruno joined in the summer of 2012 on a free transfer from Valencia and was an instant fan favourite thanks to his swashbuckling runs up the right wing.
Such is popularity that there is even a mural of him wearing a crown painted in the city centre which some spotty virgins wearing black hoodies from the Croydon area tried to vandalise not so long ago.
Since signing under Gus Poyet, he has since gone onto play 213 times for the club under four different permanent managers. Bruno took over as club captain in the summer of 2016 when Gordon Greer was released and he is only the second man to ever skipper the Albion to promotion to the top flight, following in the footsteps of Brian Horton.
It’s hard to see him being anything more than a backup player next season should we stay up, but behind the scenes his influence is clearly huge and for that reason alone he is worth keeping on.
Should we be relegated, you suspect he would be a more than adequate first choice back in the Championship, a division in which he has twice previously been named in the Team of the Season.
