Is Brighton’s promising start a sign of things to come?
Like any other football club, Brighton is building on survival for the 2020’s Premier League. In previous seasons, Brighton have looked like a team that would be looking at just staying up each season but that is not the case for the 2020/21 season.
Despite a defeat to Chelsea, a win at Newcastle and a mind blowing defeat to Manchester United – which was heavily undeserved – Brighton will look at a lot of the fixtures ahead and can see the potential of a lot of points being picked up.
The ambitions of this Brighton team should be high, looking at the top half of the table and potentially a push for the Europa League, although that would be a big ask.
Graham Potter’s performance with the club
Graham Potter is one of the Seagull’s best head coaches who was only appointed last summer. He has had eye-catching performances with the team. His contract has been extended to 2025 from the initial 2023.
One of his most memorable performances is his 3-0 victory against Tottenham Hotspur. His team managed to score three goals, two of which were scored by Aaron Connolly.
Brighton’s Impressive Setup
But was it really hubris? Off the pitch, the Seagulls seemed like they had everything in control. If you look at their set up, it clearly rivals those of the top-six clubs. It’s when they get on the field that pieces of the puzzle start falling out of place.
Brighton has two of the finest administrators in football. They poached Dan Ashworth from FA in 2019, a technical director worth his salt. The Seagulls also have Paul Barber, who has shown how instrumental he can be throughout the lockdown.
Aside from their setup, the Seagulls also have impressive facilities for proper training. Their plush training ground, and celebrated stadium are state of the art.
What Happens on the pitch?
Brighton has succeeded to get only nine wins for the third season in a row. They’ve hardly waltzed into safety with 41 points in the 2019/20 season.
Potter has shown promise to help them out of this sticky patch though. Hopefully, he can turn their ugly draws into actual wins. Potter’s tactful stability, as well as Ashworth’s deft recruitment model should hopefully get the club to where they hoped they’ll be by now.

The Club’s strategy to win
The club is aiming to get English talent through spring and autumn. They had already bought Adam Lallan (32) and Tariq Lamptey (19) in July and January respectively. Joel Veltman cost only £900,000 to sign from Ajax. Albion’s project for the top-half is considered a long-term project because of the environment’s short-termism.
Odds to Win the Premier League
Last season was quite transitional because it was the first year after Potter took charge after Christ Hughton. The Seagulls had been under Hughton’s leadership for five years. With Potter, the club adopted a pragmatic style which ensured they returned to the top flight.
After over three decades of sheer survival, the decision to part company with Hughton seemed like a reasonable, but hasty one. Graham Potter, the new manager, has been struggling to implement his different approach.
Even though the club demonstrated possession with their 23 registered shots, they suffered their first top-flight home defeat to Crystal Palace. This happened at the end of February when their win against the bitter rivals seemed like their road to relegation.
They also secured their first win of 2020 after the lockdown in June. Even so, this victory proved to be a catalyst for their comfortable survival mode.
Their survival campaign is being held together by the dependable Mat Ryan in goal, a defence superbly managed by Lewis Dunk and Tariq Lamptey, a recent signing who has proven to be a rising star.
Conclusion
For Brighton, the main goal at the moment seems to be finding ways to score more. Hopefully, Graham Potter will successfully lead his club out of the murky grounds they’re currently in.
