Liam Rosenior takes up coaching role with the Albion

Liam Rosenior has been appointed to the Brighton and Hove Albion coaching team as Simon Rusk’s new assistant.

After making just one Premier League appearance in 2017-18, Rosenior was told that his contract would not be renewed at the end of the campaign. He has since called time on his career to take up his new role.

Rosenior had originally said that he wanted to continue playing in the Premier League or the Championship, but he has since performed a u-turn. At 34 and despite being a fantastic professional, it was perhaps hardly a surprise that there was seemingly little interest. Rosenior had managed just 13 league games in the last two seasons.

The playing worlds loss undoubtedly the Albion’s gain. Rosenior has already started completing his coaching badges and has worked with Rusk’s squad during his time spent on the sidelines injured. He obviously impressed during those spells to be parachuted into the role.

Despite only playing 50 times for Brighton over the course of three seasons, Rosenior became one of the most popular players of recent times. The sight of him standing in front of the away end at Hillsborough, urging the travelling support to keep their chins up after a 2-0 Championship play off semi final defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in which the Albion had seen 23 players go off injured has become one of the most iconic images in the clubs history.

It’s that sort of understanding of what is needed and positivity that has marked him out for managerial potential. Chris Hughton obviously see’s it in him and it is a shrewd move to get a man with so much coaching potential on board at the Amex.

Rosenior will combine the role with a new job with Sky Sports. His thoughtfulness – again, another trait all great managers have – has also marked him out for a role in the media, something he did last season with great success last season when writing a popular column for The Guardian.

Rosenior has also become immersed in Albion in the Community. Keeping him at the club ensures that great work will also continue.
