Veatriki Sarri and Brighton are making Greek football history
Veatriki Sarri is having a special time in 2023 for Brighton Women. The Greek international scored twice against Reading, meaning she joins Solly March as the only two players to have two goals in a Premier League or Women’s Super League match for the Seagulls in the calendar year.
Brighton men and women have played 15 games in 2023. Roberto De Zerbi’s team have scored many more goals as they look to finish in the top six. And yet March and now Sarri remain the only two to have scored twice in one game.
March has been the most in-form player for De Zerbi. His brace came when the Seagulls won 3-0 over Liverpool in January and he has just renewed his contract. Sarri being in the same class as him is impressive for her.
More impressive is where it places her in Greek football. Already she is the first player from our country to play in the WSL and now she needs to score just two more times to beat her own best of four goals in a season, the most by a Greek player.
Sarri is now the Seagulls second top scorer with three goals, behind only Danielle Carter. Again, this is an impressive class to be in as Carter is an England international and FA Cup winner.
The two goals Sarri scored past Reading came in the space of five minutes. She opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a nice shot off her “weak” foot.
Sarri is on FIRE today! 🔥

In the 13th minute, Sarri scored with her left inside the penalty area. Brighton seemed to be heading for three points, but sadly Reading substitute Emma Harries scored two of her own to level the game.
Veatriki Sarri could have even become the first Greek player to score a WSL hat-trick. Sarri chased onto a bad pass back and Reading needed goalkeeper Grace Moloney to save.
Never mind… Sarri’s form and record breaking is helping her and Brighton make history in Greece.
