When will we next see a team outside of the traditional ‘Big Six’ in the Premier League finish top-four?

In men’s professional football in England, the term ‘The Big 6’ refers to Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, and Tottenham Hotspur.

They generate more revenue than most other clubs in the Premier League, and they have a bigger following at home and abroad.

However, certain other Premier League clubs have recently been bought by rich foreign owners, which means that more cash is being pumped into these clubs, and with this new money, surely it is only a matter of time before a team outside of the traditional ‘big six’ can finish in the top four? Who are the big 6?
Traditionally, the big 6 includes London clubs Arsenal, Chelsea, and Spurs, and Northern sides Manchester United, Manchester City, and Liverpool.

These teams tend to do well in the Premier League and finish in a top-four or top-six spot at the end of the season.

They make the most money, and they have the biggest following at a domestic level and overseas. They also tend to spend more money than the other Premier League clubs on new signings.

Can another Premier League seriously challenge the big 6 for a top-four spot?
In more recent times, the gap between the big 6 and the other 14 Premier League teams has got much smaller, so there’s a real chance that a club outside of the big 6 could end up challenging for a top-four spot.

There are 20 teams in the Premier League, and the teams that are most likely to compete for a top-four spot are:

  • Newcastle United
  • Brighton & Hove Albion
  • West Ham United
  • Brentford
  • Crystal Palace

The other Premier League teams that would like to think they can challenge the big 6 are AFC Bournemouth, Fulham, Southampton, Everton, Leeds United, and Aston Villa.

The remaining three teams in the Premier League are Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest, and Leicester City. What are the odds for teams finishing in the top 4?
The majority of today’s most trusted online sports betting sites currently have Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea as the four teams that are most likely to finish in the top four at the end of the season. These teams are then followed by Tottenham, Manchester United, Newcastle United, and Brighton & Hove Albion.

For Chelsea to finish in the top four, you are looking at average odds of around -125 in American/Moneyline odds. When you convert this into UK fractional odds, it works out to 4/5, and when converted into decimal odds, it works out to 1.80.

Liverpool are currently priced at around -286 (which is 7/20, or 1.35). Arsenal are currently priced at around -560 (1/6, or 1.18), and Manchester City are currently priced at around -10,000 (1/100, or 1.01).

In other words, a safe bet would be Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea to finish in the top four. However, don’t forget that NO bet is guaranteed.
