Alexis Mac Allister / Lionel Messi wins Brighton Look-a-Like of the Season

Sometimes, democracy does not work. If you want proof of that, then look no further than the WAB Brighton Look-a-Like of the Season 2020-21 award where Alexis Mac Allister sharing a resemblance with Lionel Messi was a narrow winner with 20.27 percent of the vote.

For our money, it was one of the most boring nominations for the award. Argentinian playmaker who wears the number 10 shirt looks like another – albeit slightly better – Argentinian forward who wears the number 10 shirt. Where is the fun in that?

Actually, it might be fun if Alexis Mac Allister played like Lionel Messi rather than just being his doppelganger. Imagine if Mac Allister scored 50 goals and was in Ballon d’Or contention every season? Nobody would be laughing then about Brighton’s xG.

Or imagine if Messi is convinced to make Brighton his next club with his Barcelona contract now expired because he wants to play with somebody who looks like him?

Stranger things have happened and should that be the case, then please feel free to drop WAB an email Graham Potter to thank us for our prestigious Look-a-Like of the Season Award luring one of the greatest players of all time to Brighton & Hove Albion.

What else might tempt Messi to Good Old Sussex By The Sea? Well, if he is a fan of vampires than turning out for the Seagulls would give him the opportunity to play alongside a bloke who looks like Transylvania’s most famous resident.

Lockdown hair did lots of weird and wonderful things to Brighton players, with Leandro Trossard’s sweeping curtains and pale complexion making him appear a dead ringer for Count Dracula.

It was nearly enough for the Vampire of Genk to finish above Mac Allister in the standings with less than two percent separating the top two, Trossard securing 18.75 percent of the vote.

Anyone watching Trossard at Euro 2020 (in 2021) will have seen that he has sadly ditched the curtains for a sensible haircut whilst representing Belgium. This might therefore be the last time he qualifies for a nomination in Look-a-Like of the Season.

Lewis Dunk’s resemblance to Neil from The Inbetweeners has no such worries. The Brighton captain is a two-time winner of this particular accolade, picking it up at both the 2014-15 and 2018-19 End of Season Awards.

Dunk secured 18.07 percent of the vote, just 0.68 percent behind Count Trossard and 2.2 percent behind Mac Allister and Messi, making this the closest run of the 10 categories.

And yet despite how tight it was, our favourite Brighton look-a-like of the season – and perhaps ever – could not even force their way into the top four. What is wrong with you people?

It was just after Christmas when somebody pointed out that every time they saw Big Dan Burn with his sweeping blonde haircut, they thought he looked like Princess Diana.

A little research reveals that what Burn had done – intentional or not – in honour of the People’s Princess was called a ‘feathered shag‘, an incredible name for a haircut we are sure you will agree.

Quite how Burn has not won this award – let alone cracked the first three – is a complete mystery. The People’s left back has played this season like a candle in the wind, never knowing who to cling to when the rain set in. He deserved better.
