Dan Burn voted WeAreBrighton.com Player of the Month for August 2019

Dan Burn. He’s a man who Brighton signed for £3.5m last summer, loaned straight back to Wigan Athletic for five months and then didn’t give him a single minute of game time in the second half of the Premier League season once he’d finally arrived at the Amex.

That’s what makes his triumphing in our WeAreBrighton.com Player of the Month award all the more impressive. For all the money showered on the likes of Leandro Trossard (second in the poll), Adam Webster and Neal Maupay, it’s last season’s forgotten man who’s been voted as the best Albion player in August by a country mile.

Burn took home 77.11% of the vote, light years ahead of the 18.84% that Trossard managed to accumulate. It isn’t hard to see why he was such a popular choice either.

He’s outshone both Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy. Duffy – last season’s Player of the Year lest we forget – was even dropped for the first time in his Albion career to make way for Adam Webster when many people assumed it would be Burn who would be out the team in order to fit in the £18m signing from Bristol City.

Burn has picked up three man-of-the-match awards. He’s popped up on the left wing to deliver David Beckham-esque crosses. And he’s even had a tweet dedicated to him from the Manchester City’s Twitter account praising a first touch which drew applause from Sergio Aguero.

All of which makes him a worthy winner. Trossard is a worthy second as well for an exciting first month as a Brighton player. He scored the equaliser in the 1-1 draw against West Ham United and could have had another in that game were it not for a controversial VAR decision.

The Belgian was the best player on the pitch that day and it was a similar story in the 2-0 defeat to Southampton. Even City struggled to contain him at the Etihad Stadium and with a little bit more composure in front of goal, he could have made Pep Guardiola’s side’s afternoon far less comfortable than it was.

Third place went to Solly March who, along with Burn, has been another Graham Potter success story. The new Albion boss has converted March into a wing back and he seems to be thriving in his new position, putting in a string of good performances down the left flank.

That was enough to see him keep one of last season’s better performers in Bernardo out of the side – as well as earning 3.77% of the vote.
