£5.50 Scotch Egg voted WAB Amex Stadium Food of the Season 2023-24
Our first ever WAB Amex Stadium Food of the Season Award has provided an almighty shock with £5.50 Scotch Egg beating old favourite £3.50 Bag of Starburst to title.
Just 1.13 percent separated the top two in this brand new category, introduced in response to football stadium food and drink offerings becoming hot topics thanks to social media accounts like Footy Scran.
The Albion also used playing in the Europa League as an excuse to diversify their range. For each home game, a special item was introduced from the country of the visiting team.
It therefore felt high time to acknowledge with an award some of the high-quality, bargain buys now available alongside classics like Burger with Gherkin (literally a burger with one gherkin).
Despite the presence of cordon bleu from Greece, the Netherlands, France and Italy, most observers expected £3.50 Bag of Starbust to win.
After all, it has for many years now been the reference point for rip off prices faced by Brighton fan. And that was before the 30p increase in price introduced for 2023-24.
Instead though, £5.50 Scotch Egg takes the crown. A new addition for the season, the Amex Stadium Scotch Egg caused a national stir within days of it first appearing for the 4-1 win over Luton Town on the opening day of the campaign.
The Daily Star ran a wonderful headline of Brighton charging £5.50 for a scotch eff which is more of a rip off than Moises Caicedo.
“Brighton have been accused of overpricing a scotch egg like they did Chelsea star Moises Caicedo,” read the opening paragraph of the article.
“The Seagulls pocketed a mammoth £100 million up front this week as Caicedo’s move to Stamford Bridge was completed, with a further £15 million in performance-related add-ons making it a British transfer record fee.”
“It’s not just exiting players that Brighton are good at getting a ton of money for, though, as one of their supporters showed by purchasing a scotch egg for £5.50 in the North Stand of the Amex Stadium.”
As already noted, £3.50 Bag of Starburst was forced into second place by Scotch Egg. Maybe the Albion introduced £5.50 Scotch Egg as a deliberate means of overshadowing the 30p rise in Bag of Starbust, similar to Boris Johnson’s infamous dead cat strategy.
In which case, it worked. The even-more-expensive-than-before Bag of Starburst has barely been mentioned thanks to £5.50 Scotch Egg. Clever stuff, whoever came up with it.
Third place in WAB Amex Stadium Food of the Season 2023-24 went to one of those aforementioned Europa League specials.
The October 2023 visit of Ajax meant croquets being sold in honour of the Dutch visitors. A tiny box with three of them in. For £7. Seven pounds. Three croquets.
Even the club seem to have realised this was a scandal as in putting together the shortlist for this award, we discovered all traces of £7 croquets have been deleted from their social media accounts.
