Brighton FPL 2023-24 Season Review
It was a campaign Albion supporters are unlikely to forget in a hurry. 2023-24 brought European action to Brighton for the very first time, saw the Seagulls soaring high towards the top of the table at the start and deliver some fantastic returns for FPL managers.
There was also a sad goodbye to Roberto De Zerbi, who departed upon the completion of the season. De Zerbi guided the Albion to 11th place. it probably would have been higher had Brighton not suffered with quite so many injuries.
Before Albion players started dropping like flies, Brighton won five of their opening six matches. They scored at least three goals in each. Those early weeks were absolutely thrilling with DeZerbiBall operating at full throttle.
In the Europa League, there were wins over AEK Athens, Marseille, Roma and a famous double over Dutch giants Ajax. Memories to last a lifetime were created on the European stage.
Plenty of Brighton players impressed both domestically and in continental competition. Let us take a look at who were the leading FPL assets for Brighton in 2023-24.
Most FPL points for Brighton in 2023-24
For the second successive season, Pascal Gross was the highest-scoring Brighton player in FPL. With a final tally of 153, it is the third time in seven seasons Der Kaiser has exceeded 150 points.
Gross peaked when grabbing 12 points in the 2-1 victory over Brentford in Gameweek 15. He went onto bring in 11 during Gameweek 23’s 4-1 hammering of Crystal Palace with a performance which helped him go onto win WAB February 2024 Brighton Player of the Month.
What makes Gross’ haul even more impressive is he ended the campaign with 10 blanks in a row. Had his form not tailed off, he could have racked up his biggest ever FPL season haul.
Gross accumulated 29 FPL bonus points over the 2023-24 season, more than double the next best Brighton player. Throughout the Premier League, only Cole Palmer and Phil Foden accumulated more bonus points than Gross.
Most Brighton goals 2023-24
An assist in Gameweek 37 against Chelsea allowed Joao Pedro to join Gross in the 100 Points Club. The Brazilian forward would have got there much quicker were it not for the February hamstring injury which sidelined him for six matches.
At that point in the season, Pedro was the third-best forward in FPL for penalty area touches (134) and came at a very cheap price.
The £30 million buy from Watford netted nine league goals despite starting just 19 of his 31 appearances. Additionally, Pedro scored 10 of 11 penalties across all competitions.
Overall, it was a good year in terms of attacking for Brighton. The Seagulls racked up the fifth-most shots of any team (561).
Most Brighton assists 2023-24
Back to that man Pascal Gross again. 11 assists in total proved enough to earn him a spot in the Germany squad for Euro 2024.
Gross was responsible for the second-highest number of crosses (238) and chances created (103). In addition, he delivered a leading number of successful corners (51). That might come as something of a surprise given the Albion’s well-documented set piece issues.
Elsewhere, Kaoru Mitoma impressed by setting up six goals before Gameweek 18. He only managed two more outings after that, a huge factor in why Brighton struggled in the second half of the campaign.
Best Brighton bargain signing in FPL 2023-24
It was not until over halfway into the season that Brighton secured their first clean sheet, making them the last team to record a shutout. After that, however, their promising underlying stats were rewarded with five inside the next 11 outings.
Across the campaign as a whole, the Seagulls conceded the fourth-fewest box shots (326) and sixth-fewest from anywhere (468).
A large part of that was centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke. The Dutch defender had a fine first season as a regular starter, costing FPL managers only £4.0 million for the most part. Do not expect to pick up Van Hecke so cheap next season.
Brighton players to watch for 2024-25
Speaking of next season, let us take a look ahead to which Brighton assets are worth keeping an eye on for 2024-25.
Should Evan Ferguson fully recover from his current ankle injury, a good run in the starting XI could pay dividends for FPK managers.
Ferguson was still just 18-years-old when he hit his Gameweek 4 hat-trick at home to Newcastle. He remains a serious talent.
As for Simon Adingra, his debut Premier League campaign brought six goals which included scoring at home against all three promoted outfits.
After Pedro, he was the best Brighton asset for touches (167), shots inside the penalty area (38) and shots on target (22).
