Brighton FPL Gameweek 30: Gomez already making his mark

The Premier League returns with Brighton unbeaten in five matches, within touching distance of the Champions League spot and having seen some new faces like Diego Gomez come to the fore – something which will be of particular interest to FPL managers over the remainder of the season.

A 2-2 draw at Manchester City was an impressive result last time out, providing the Albion with their first ever point from the Etihad Stadium.

Our FPL Gameweek 28 preview backed Pervis Estupinan (£4.9 million) to grab his first goal of the campaign. Sure enough, the left back delivered when curling home a lovely free kick.

With Brighton just two points away from fourth and the Premier League likely to be given five Champions League places, the Gameweek 30 visit of Aston Villa to the Amex feels massive.

Taking all that into account, here are a couple of interesting Albion players to consider ahead of the Tuesday 19:15 BST deadline.

Diego Gomez (£5.5 million)

Paraguayan international Gomez is a gigantic FPL differential pick as he adapts to life at Brighton quicker than any of the Albion’s other impressive South American imports.

Whereas players like Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo needed time to establish themselves, Gomez has been thrown into the starting XI within a couple of months of his £12 million January arrival from Inter Miami.

He has started two of the last three Premier League matches and yet is in only 2,000 of 11.4 million FPL squads.

Gomez is currently being used as a central midfielder. In his most recent 204 minutes, he had set up three big chances and had one for himself. Heading just wide from a Jack Hinshelwood (£4.9 million) cross.

Yankubu Minteh (£5.1 million)

It is also worth considering that Brighton being knocked out of the FA Cup by Nottingham Forest means the Albion will feature in Gameweek 34 when several other teams will not.

A certain Graham Potter brings his West Ham United side to the Amex, for what is sure to a spicy clash. Brighton stuck four goals past a Potter-managed team on his previous return.

The Albion also have a fruitful looking home game against Leicester City to come. It would therefore be wise for FPL managers to invest in Brighton’s attack.

Especially considering no team has accumulated more more big chances (30) and shots on target (33) in their latest six occasions.

Cheap midfielder Minteh is very handy for Bench Boost situations – a one-week chip that makes all 15 squad players active.

Minteh has started six league games in a row and had the most penalty area touches (eight) of anyone during the City draw.

Three recent attacking returns have seen an increase in ownership that has brought a price rise, so now seems like a good time to invest.

Captaincy

Recent form and upcoming fixtures have thrust Erling Haaland (£14.8 million) back onto the FPL scene. Many have sold the out-of-form Cole Palmer (£10.8 million) in time to catch the Norwegian’s eighth goal in 10.

Yet Haaland could be injured from City’s cup win at Bournemouth. This would stop owners from giving him the armband at home to Leicester. The Foxes have lost 13 of their last 14, conceding 35 along the way.

Otherwise, the leading contender should be Mohamed Salah (£13.7 million). While Liverpool were below-par in recent Champions League and Carabao Cup matches, let us not forget that Gameweek 28 brought Salah his fifth double-digit haul in his past seven league outings.

His 306 overall points have already broken the all-time FPL record with nine matches still left to play. Nobody else is particularly close to 200.

The Reds have a chance to bounce back from these disappointments in their home Merseyside derby against Everton.
