Georginio Rutter voted WAB January 2025 Brighton Player of the Month

After scoring four goals through January 2025, it comes as no real surprise that Georginio Rutter has been voted WAB Brighton Player of the Month.

Rutter picked up exactly 33 percent of the vote, although his infectious personality could be as much to do with hit as his exploits in front of goal.

In terms of the latter, Rutter notched twice at Norwich City to see Brighton on their way to a 4-0 FA Cup third round victory.

The Canaries actually started the better side at Carrow Road with their fans serenading the Albion support with a chorus of “Premier League, you’re having a laugh.”

Rutter opening the scoring was therefore an important moment in terms of turning the tide. He bagged a second on the stroke of half time and it was fairly comfortable for Brighton from that point on.

Five days later and Rutter came off the bench to wrap up a 2-0 win at Ipswich Town, ending an eight game wait for a Premier League victory.

The Frenchman was again named amongst the substitutes for the trip to Manchester United but again still managed to score. His was the third goal in a 3-1 victory as Brighton won for the third consecutive time visiting Old Trafford.

As for his non-footballing antics, it is worth following the Albion’s social media channels just for Rutter content alone.

There were copious examples of Rutter being caught unaware on camera in January 2025 whilst doing strange things around the training ground.

He led the celebrations on the pitch at Portman Road and also became a GIF for his shocked reaction to a VAR decision. In modern day football where personality seems to be media trained out of most players, Rutter is the sort of ridiculous character the game needs.

Second place in WAB Brighton January 2025 Player of the Month went to Kaoru Mitoma, some 10 percent behind Rutter in the poll.

Mitoma racked up two goals and one assist through three strong performances against Norwich, Ipswich and United. His return to form suggests that Fabian Hurzeler got the timing and decision to rest Mitoma for a couple of games at the end of December spot on.

He scored the opening goal against the Tractor Boys with a clever finish beyond ex-Albion goalkeeper Christian Walton.

At Old Trafford, Mitoma went sprinting clear of the United defence early on before expertly squaring to Yankubu Minteh for the first Brighton goal.

He then added the second himself when Minteh returned the favour. A deep cross from the Gambian winger found Mitoma sliding in at the far post to convert.

And if all that was not enough, Mitoma ended January by rejecting the chance to discuss a mega money move to Saudi Arabia.

Al Nassr were willing to pay Brighton up to £90 million to make Mitoma a teammate of Cristiano Ronaldo. Mitoma though had no interest in moving to an oil rich sportswashing nation, instead prioritising his career and playing at the highest level possible over cold, hard cash. What a man.

Carlos Baleba won our December Player of the Month award but he had to settle for third place here. How good a player Baleba now is was evidenced in the awful 1-0 home defeat to Everton.

He was the only person in a Brighton shirt to give a half-decent account of himself whilst most of his teammates looked like they had never played football before in their lives.

And it is not just Albion fans who rate Baleba highly. Praise for Baleba in January included Charlie Adam saying he was the best midfielder in the Premier League and Glenn Murray claiming he could go onto become better than both Moises Caicedo and Yves Bissouma.
