Vote for your May 2022 WAB Brighton Player of the Month

The curtain came down on a record breaking 2021-22 season in style for Brighton with an unbeaten May 2022 providing us with what it sure to be another keenly contested WAB Player of the Month Award.

There have not been many days in the 121 year history of the Albion like their opening match of May, when the mighty Manchester United were demolished 4-0 at the Amex.

So surreal was the experience that you might have been forgiven for thinking the half time pies had been laced with magic mushrooms.

Cristiano Ronaldo stropped around, Ralf Rangnick looked utterly bemused and the Red Devils even resorted to chucking on Harry Maguire once Brighton had moved 4-0 ahead in an attempt to strengthen their defence and prevent the scoreline becoming even more embarrassing.

A 1-1 draw at 1996 Coca Cola Cup runners up The Leeds United followed. Playing in a cauldron of noise that was Elland Road and against a Peacocks side fighting for their Premier League lives, to come away with a point was an underrated result.

Brighton then rounded the season off with another Amex win over a top side seven side, ending West Ham United’s hopes of Europa League football in the process via a 3-1 win.

Where on Earth did that form home come from? Having been victorious just three times all season at the Amex before May and scoring only 12 times along the way, the Seagulls picked up six points from six with seven goals netted in front of a delighted crowd.

Anyone of the six candidates for our WAB Player of the Month award would be a worthy winner. And in truth, there are three or four players who have every right to feel aggrieved that they are not on the shortlist.

What a way to finish the campaign. And now, for the last time this season it is over to you to pick your final Player of the Month of 2021-22…

The candidates for WeAreBrighton.com May 2022 Brighton Player of the Month

Moises Caicedo
The boy wonder was voted WAB Brighton Player of the Month for April 2022 and he showed no signs of slowing down in May. A clinical finish from outside the box set the Albion on their way to victory over United. When Yves Bissouma departed the West Ham game at half time, Caicedo was given more responsibility in terms of keeping tabs on Declan Rice. It says much about Caicedo’s ability that Rice was much less of an influence one had the man from Ecuador tracking him.

Marc Cucurella
May 2022 got off to the best possible start for Cucurella as he scored against United for his first Albion goal and was then named Brighton Player of the Season a little over 48 hours later. Showed his versatility once again, being used as both a left wing back and as one of three central defenders. With the campaign he has had, it is no surprise to hear that Manchester City are rumoured to be interested in his services.

Pascal Gross
With his contract set to expire at the end of June, Gross spent May reminding everyone just what a player he is. Scored brilliant, calm and clinical goals against United and West Ham and added an assist in the victory over the Hammers with a pinpoint corner headed home by Danny Welbeck. Despite all that, his best moment of the month was a double Gross Turn followed by a backheel which left Fred completely bamboozled.

Robert Sanchez
So good has the defence in front of Sanchez been over the past seven weeks that he has not hard an awful lot to do. The one exception came at The Leeds United, when he made three outstanding saves to help ensure that Brighton came away with a point. Another who is being linked with a summer move, with Leicester City said to be prepared to pay £50 million to take him to the King Power.

Joel Veltman
What a May for the Dutch defender, both on and off the pitch. Helped mark Cristiano Ronaldo out of the game when United came to town and the following day, he uploaded a video to his Instagram account of himself wearing a pair of oven gloves to rescue a seagull which had become stuck in his chimney. Oh yeah, he also scored his only goal of the season against West Ham. Easily forgotten in light of the seagull incident.

Danny Welbeck
Welbz was Dat Guy in May, enjoying his best run of form in a Brighton shirt. A lovely little dink after a run timed to perfection to spring the Leeds offside trap gave him his fifth goal of the season. Added a sixth a week later with a powerful header against West Ham. Did not score against his former club United, but gave their defence a testing time all evening.
