Vote for your September 2023 WAB Brighton Player of the Month

September 2023 might have ended in disaster for Brighton via a 6-1 defeat at Aston Villa, but before that things went quite well as the candidates in our WAB Player of the Month award are testament to.

Because of the squad rotation implemented by Roberto De Zerbi in the face of the Albion playing Europa League football for the first time, some make the shortlist for just one or two impressive performances.

Take Evan Ferguson, for example. A sensational hat-trick as Brighton beat Newcastle United in their opening game of September 2023 was enough on its own to get the Irish teenager into the vote for Player of the Month.

Tariq Lamptey rolled back the years to lockdown with excellent performances in the 3-1 win at Manchester United and the 1-0 Carabao Cup defeat against his former club Chelsea.

Joao Pedro plundered two goals when the Albion made their European debut with a home defeat to AEK Athens. The Brazilian forward also showed why Brighton had made him their £30 million record buy with a lovely finish at Old Trafford.

As for the remaining September game we are yet to mention, well that was the Kaoru Mitoma show against Plucky Little Bournemouth.

The Albion had been awful throughout the first half until the Japanese Bullet Train was introduced from the bench, winning a precious three points for Brighton almost single-handedly with two fine goals.

With so many different players providing so many different game changing moments in so many different games, this looks like another tough vote to call.

Of course, we said that last month… and then Billy Gilmour ended up racking up over 40 percent to blow the rest of the candidates out the window.

Might it be a similar story this time around?

The candidates for WeAreBrighton.com September 2023 Brighton Player of the Month

Evan Ferguson
The hype machine went into understandable overdrive after Ferguson destroyed Newcastle with the first treble of his career. In the process, he became just the fourth player in Premier League history to score a hat-trick aged 18 or younger. We wouldn’t be accepting any invites to the Saudi consulate if we were you, Evan…

Billy Gilmour
Has grasped the opportunity presented by the sale of Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo with a string of excellent performances in midfield. Gilmour’s September highlights included the cross which Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez headed in for an own goal to start the comeback against the Cherries and a brilliant recovery and through ball to assist Ferguson for his second past the Saudi Sportswashers.

Pascal Gross
Scored against United as is tradition, making it an unreal seven career goals past the Red Devils. Wrote his name into the history books as the first ever player to lead Brighton out as captain in a European fixture. Picked up an injury in that game against AEK with his subsequent absence highlighting just how important he is to the Albion, seeing as two defeats out of three have followed.

Tariq Lamptey
Since his return from nine months out injured in October 2021, there have been glimpses of the old Lamptey. Two assists from left back against United after being surprisingly picked ahead of Pervis Estupinan represented his most devastating display in several years. Lamptey followed that up with a strong showing at Stamford Bridge.

Kaoru Mitoma
Needed just 15 seconds on the pitch to put Brighton ahead in the 3-1 win over Bournemouth via a goal which showcased both his blistering pace and his brilliant dribbling ability. Equally impressive but never as heralded is how good Mitoma is in the air, as evidenced with the glancing header which provided his second and the Albion’s third against the Cherries.

Joao Pedro
No way Pedro! Completed the rout of United when picking out the corner of Andre Onana’s goal with unerring accuracy. Not only did he then score both the penalties Brighton were awarded against AEK, but he also won them himself when being felled illegally in the box.
