Another October without a win, but did anybody really expect anything else? It’s over four years now since Brighton and Hove Albion last won in the 10th month of the year and this time it comes off the back of a winless September in the league, meaning the Albion have slipped into a potential relegation battle.

The main problem has been misfiring strikers with every goal in October being scored by defenders. Lewis Dunk added another two to his collection in the 1-1 draws away at Watford and Huddersfield Town, Joe Bennett netted in the same scoreline at home to Rotherham United and Gordon Greer got the consolation goal in the 2-1 defeat to Middlesbrough.

There was a brave performance in going down 2-0 to a near-full strength Tottenham Hotspur side in the fourth round of the Capital One Cup but this was largely another disappointing month and that’s reflected in the candidates including Kazenga LuaLua who got sent off at Huddersfield, Paddy McCourt who only started the one game against Spurs and David Stockdale who has taken three months to finally have a good game with some vital saves in securing the draw with the Millers.

THE CONTENDERS
Joe Bennett
Played a part in a number of decent defensive showings in October and he rounded an impressive October off with a decent strike to open the scoring in the home draw against Rotherham United at the end of the month.

Lewis Dunk
Continued his brilliant start to the season with another two goals to earn points at Watford and Huddersfield Town. It comes as little surprise to hear he has Premier League clubs sniffing around given his outstanding form this season, one of the only positives of Sami Hyypia’s reign so far.

Gordon Greer
Headed the consolation goal against Middlesbrough and it was largely another month of decent work from the captain, including coming close to netting one of the greatest own goals in Albion history at home to Rotherham.

Kazenga LuaLua
Red carded at Huddersfield but it was a decent month other than that as he provided most of the Albion’s best attacking opportunities when coming off the bench at Watford and home to Middlesbrough.

Paddy McCourt
Already a fans favourite despite having done, er, not a lot in his Brighton career. His homeless beard and constantly playing like a man who has put away 10 pints of Guinness the previous evening is a joy to behold, as are his bewitching runs which have lit up an otherwise pretty dull month.

David Stockdale
Had a slow to start his Albion career with it taking him until mid-September to actually make a save but a much improved October showed just why the club had parted with £1.5m to Fulham for him with a point earning display at home against Rotherham.
