Will Buckley voted WeAreBrighton.com Player of the Month for January 2012

After four largely injury hit months, Will Buckley finally got fit and with that came his first consistent run of games in a Brighton and Hove Albion shirt which was enough to land him our WeAreBrighton.com Player of the Month award for January 2012.

The £1.5m signing from Watford was a convincing winner, taking over 75% of the votes to see off the challenges of Sexy Pete Brezovan and Liam Bridcutt who finished second and third respectively.

Buckly was virtually unplayable against Southampton and it was his torment of Dan Harding that led to the former Albion left backs early withdrawal for tactical reasons after he picked up a quick yellow card. He followed that up by scoring both the goals in the win against Peterborough United, adding another last minute winner to those he already notched against Doncaster Rovers and Nottingham Forest and he forced the Newcastle own goal which secured the Albion’s 1-0 win over their Premier Division opponents in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Gus Poyet’s decision to replace Casper Ankergren with Brezovan for the Southampton game raised more than a few eyebrows but it has proven to be a decision which had paid off handsomely. Sexy Pete has conceded only four goals in seven games and only one from open play in the league while it was his heroics that ensured the Albion made it as far as penalties against Blue Square Premier side Wrexham in the FA Cup and he then excelled in the penalty shoot out.

Another good month for Liam Bridcutt saw him linked with a move to Premier League Norwich which, thankfully for us, didn’t lead to anything. He excelled against Newcastle United and kept the midfield ticking over after his return from suspension in the victory over Southampton.
