Yves Bissouma voted WAB May 2021 Brighton Player of the Month

Yves Bissouma rounded off an outstanding 2020-21 in which he has become one of the best midfielders in the Premier League by winning our WAB Brighton Player of the Month award for May 2021.

Nobody has been able to stop the Malian over the past eight weeks. He won April’s award too and has topped the WAB Power Rankings for May and April, meaning that we are starting to run out of superlatives for him.

The biggest clubs in Europe are being linked with a move for his services this summer, including Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain.

Should somebody be willing to pay what Tony Bloom wants, then Bissouma will depart with the blessings of Albion fans everywhere as he deserves his chance to play and win trophies at the highest level.

Yves Bissouma saved his two best performances in May for when Brighton took on two of his suitors. Against Pep Guardiola’s champions, he was the main reason that the Albion were able to ensure that City had their lowest ever possession share in a top flight match under Guardiola.

Bissouma constantly won the ball back with his defensive skills and then used his passing ability to put Brighton back on the front foot. Guardiola could not fail to be impressed, in-between losing his mind at Graham Potter having the nerve to celebrate the Albion scoring a goal.

At the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal fans thought that Bissouma was playing so well because he was desperate to secure a move to the Gunners this summer. Little did they realise that he is actually that good every week, be it against Arsenal or Blackpool.

If this was to be goodbye, then Bissouma was at least bowing out in style. There could be further individual accolades in the offing in the coming weeks for him too, with voting now open in our WAB Awards where he will be one of the favourites for the coveted title of Player of the Season.

The race for second and third behind Bissouma in May Player of the Month was a tight one as Pascal Gross just about managed to edge out Danny Welbeck.

Gross has been one of the success stories of the second half of the 2020-21 season. Having made only a handful of starts before mid-January, he has been named in Potter’s XI for the past 19 Premier League matches as Brighton have gone from fighting a relegation battle to securing top flight safety relatively comfortably.

In May, he scored the opening goal from the penalty spot as 1996 Coca Cola League Cup runners up The Leeds United suffered a shock 2-0 defeat at the Amex.

He claimed assists against Wolves and Man City, played in three different positions and even assumed Der Kapitan’s armband whilst Lewis Dunk was suspended. Nobody derides Gross as being ‘only’ a sEt pIeCE mErcHaNt anymore.

Welbeck was back in third just 1.66% behind the German playmaker. Dat Guy scored a Goal of the Season contender to wrap up the win over The Leeds United and added his sixth of the season in the draw with West Ham United.

Injury brought his evening against Man City to a premature end, but he still managed to have a major say in that game when drawing the foul which led to João Cancelo’s red card after less than 10 minutes.

Having rejuvenated his career this season at the Amex, Welbeck will not be short of offers from other clubs when his contract expires at the end of June. Brighton should do everything they can to try and convince him to stay at the Amex.
