Albion silence Anfield for 45 minutes: Liverpool 2-1 Brighton photos
If photos came with sound, these Albion fan pictures from Liverpool 2-1 Brighton would show an Anfield silenced by how good the Albion were in the first half.
It is no exaggeration to say Brighton could have led two, three or even four goals to nil going into the break. And it would have been deserved.
Instead, they went in only 1-0 ahead. Ferdi Kadioglu was the scorer, rounding off a fine passing move when Danny Welbeck helped on a Kaoru Mitoma pass into the path of the Turkish international.
Kadioglu did the rest, lashing home a vicious drive across Caoimhin Kelleher and into the opposite corner.
Liverpool were let off when Georginio Rutter squandered a one-on-one following an outrageous Yasin Ayari pass which left Virgil van Dijk looking like he had just swallowed a load of glue.
Kadioglu blazed a volley into the Kop when six yards out from another Mitoma cross. Welbeck was then inches away when crashing a free kick just the wrong side of the post and into the side netting.
Anfield found its voice in the second half, helped when Pervis Estupinan and Trent Alexander-Arnold had a coming together.
The increased noise coupled with visible tiredness amongst the Albion ranks left Brighton looking increasingly vulnerable to conceding. And so it proved when two Redmen goals in the space of three minutes turned the game on its head.
Cody Gakpo claimed the first with a cross which evaded every Albion and Liverpool player on its way to nestling in at the far post.
Mo Salah was then allowed to cut inside from the right wing and onto his left foot. That is never good news and he whistled an unstoppable effort beyond Verbruggen.
Fabian Hurzeler faced some criticism afterwards for not making earlier substitutions to try and sustain the tempo Brighton were playing at.
That may well of made a difference. But this was still a solid Brighton showing in which they frightened one of the best teams in England at an extremely difficult place to go.
Plenty for Albion supporters to be positive about, even after a second defeat of the season to go with the 4-2 humbling at Chelsea five weeks earlier.
