Rainbow Laces light up Amex: Brighton 1-1 Southampton photos
So the result might not have been great. But as our photos from Brighton 1-1 Southampton show, the evening was at least brightened up by it being Rainbow Laces Day 2024.
The Albion always pull out all the stops to support Rainbow Laces. This year we had fireworks, a light show and a giant flag passed over the East Stand Upper before kick off against the Saints.
Southampton even got into the spirit by sporting a fluorescent pink away kit. The Saints were yet to pick a Premier League point wearing it, arriving at the Amex having lost their past nine top flight away games in a row.
That though all changed as Brighton – with grim predictability – followed up a 2-1 win over Manchester City in their previous home match by dropping points to bottom of the table Southampton.
The Albion dominated the first 30 minutes and should have been ahead long before Kaoru Mitoma eventually secured a 1-0 lead.
Mitoma, Danny Welbeck and Georginio Rutter twice in quick succession were all guilty of squandering opportunities.
Brighton finally moved ahead on 29 when Mitoma headed a bouncing Tariq Lamptey cross past Joe Lumley, the Saints fourth choice goalkeeper making his Premier League debut aged 29.
The Albion appeared to ease off after Mitoma struck and that allowed Southampton back into the game. Flynn Downes equalised on the hour mark when Brighton failed to clear their lines, sowing panic into the home ranks.
There was a lucky escape when Southampton put the ball in the back of the net eight minutes later. After a lengthy VAR intervention, the goal was ruled out for offside based on Adam Armstrong interfering with play.
Armstrong was allegedly causing an issue for Bart Verbruggen, who later admitted he did not understand why the goal had been chalked off.
Brighton could therefore consider themselves a little fortuitous to have drawn the game – with the point taking the Seagulls into second spot in the table after 13 games.
