Seagulls sink at Selhurst: Palace 2-1 Brighton photos

They say that reliving a harrowing experience can be cathartic. So here are some Brighton fan photos from the 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace.

To say this was not the Albion’s finest moment would be a slight understatement. No home team finishing a game with only nine players had ever come out victorious before in the Premier League. Until Palace 2-1 Brighton.

And you had to go all the way back to the 1932-33 season for the last time Eagles completed a league double over Seagulls. Until Palace 2-1 Brighton.

But hey. At least the sun shone. And we did get to see Danny Welbeck become the Albion’s leading Premier League scorer.

Dat Guy notched his 31st league goal in Brighton colours, aptly in the 31st minute. Putting himself clear of Pascal Gross in the standings.

Things did not get off to the best of starts for the Albion as Palace took the lead within three minutes of kick off.

The outstanding Eberechi Eze found Jean-Philippe Mateta, left in an inexcusable amount of space by Jan Paul van Hecke and Lewis Dunk. Mateta made the most of it, smashing a rocket past Bart Verbruggen.

Welbeck levelled when good movement managed to get him free in the box to meet a Yankubu Minteh cross with a deft touch, helping the ball beyond Dean Henderson.

It remained 1-1 until 10 minutes into the second half when Daniel Munoz struck for Palace. Eze was again the architect, leading a quick counter to slip a sideways pass to Munoz. His shot took a couple of deflections on its way to defying Verbruggen.

The final 15 minutes plus 12 of injury time provided plenty of drama. Eddie Nkeitah and Marc Guehi saw red to leave Palace down to nine. Jan Paul van Hecke did likewise as Brighton finished with 10.

But even with a numerical advantage, the Albion never looked like finding an equaliser. Bragging rights to the Eagles… just as it had been when they won 3-1 at the Amex in December.
